A good friend of mine knows a guy named Herman Cortez.
It seems this Cortez guy had came back from the new world with a strange fruit the people were eating over there.
Well Herman gave him some seeds of this new fruit and my friend in turn gave me some.
This summer I grew it and decided to add some along with yet another fruit from there we call paprika.
If this works it will change the way Europeans eat from now on.

No way could I eat 2 gallons of stew so I fired up Gertrude to can some.
Here she is now building up a head of steam.

4 quarts of vegetable beef stew, 3 more quarts in the canner processing.
I ate a quart.
I used an empty quart jar filled with water and no lid on it for a spacer.
You don't need a jar falling over.
The other things I keep handy are leather gloves a hammer jar lifter and small channel locks.

No really I use it to very gently tap the lid off.
I stand out of the way while I'm doing it.
I have three things telling me there isn't any pressure in the canner.
Me keeping my hands out of the way is an extra safety step.
Steam burns suck.

Default Random Pictures.

My husband and I stopped to check out the Gifford Homestead on the road going into Fruita UT during our June road trip. I spotted this sitting on the floor in one of the rooms. The other tourists there couldn't figure out what the heck I was taking a picture of!

Wow it is almost just like mine.
I am so glad I restored the old girl.

I looked on line for pictures of the homestead and saw some with the canner sitting on the old wood stove.

Here's another online picture (I did not take one of my own, for some reason) of the sewing machine they had. It's identical to the one my grandmother owned that she taught my sister's and I how to sew on.

Thank you Ginny.
Did you see what she looked like before I restored her?
Knowing the stove would be tied up today I soaked some cranberry beans over night.
Dont gross out but this is my favorite way to eat beans.
Onions sweet relish and ketchup.
It is a very old school way of eating beans and go back to the glory days of chow chow.
We had this once a week in the school cafeteria with all of the cornbread syrup and milk you could eat.
They would even let you go back as many times as you wanted.

Here I am again, fully caffeinated from the strong iced espresso I had after work as the weekend has started and I will sleep whenever I want to and wake up without an alarm clock...so why do I look at your postings in the Photo Gallery and Recipes,Worth, when I know there will be pictures of food? Dinner was more than 6 hours ago, and I don't want to eat anything this late or it won't have time to be digested. Why do I torture myself? I was getting a little hungry, but now I am starving! Arrrrghhh!

Yes this southern boy likes white clam sauce who would have thought.
Ingredients dry vermouth olive oil garlic clams salt red pepper flakes oregano basil.
Too lazy to mess with an onion.

Clam sauce? Never had one. The store has it in cans/jars. I bet it is not the best to try. Homemade has to be delicious.
