Tangerines-I like them but they seem watered down in the past few years. Or maybe I am...

Just like everything else citrus is bred for market not flavor.
The old breeds are much better but you will hardly find them in the store.
The Hamlin orange from the 1800's is fantastic.
Rule of thumb if it is seedless it sucks.

Yes to the microplane. Every cook should have one. I shudder to think how I tried to zest citrus before that came along. Don't have a spiral veggie cutter yet but will for sure, once our house is built (no room for even one more thing in the dinky kitchen I'm in now).

Did you know that Microplane started out as wood working tools?

Oh so true. I detest the citrus from the FFA fruit sales we have up here. I have never gotten a good bag or box of oranges. I quit buying them. You mayt as well throw your money away as opposed to buying them. When we were kids they were great, but not now. BORING!

The microplane is an awesome tool. I have two of them. I found a box grater at the outlet store one time, I wish I had bought two of them.

Deborah... cooking takes some decent tools in the kitchen, too. As we are speaking about specifics I just want to say cooking in general is easier with a few good quality tools than a kitchen full of junk ones. Having cheap junky tools to work with makes it really hard to get excited about doing any job, be it vacuuming, making a piece of furniture or cooking... we need to be able to depend on using a tool that works everytime we pick it up. It really makes the job easier and more enjoyable.

Yes, I read that. Brilliant 'light bulb' moment for that guy!

I bet it was his wife that came up with the idea unless he was like me.

I just looked I was right, it was his wife.

OK, things are better-nuts and radishes for chips, more salads, drinking more water, making baked potatoes with sauteed sweet red peppers on top, and actually bought some cereal !

Hi Deborah,

For cold nights we like a big pot of chicken soup. It's really easy for the lazy cook like me. I get all my ingredients from Trader Joe's, because they're cheap and organic. The flavor is really good and intense as long as you haven't added too much water in the pot.

Ingredients:
1. One pack of drumstick, with skin and bone (about 5)
2. One medium yellow onion, chopped
3. One pack of crimini mushrooms, halved
4. 1/2 pack of baby spinach or chopped celery
5. Two tomatoes, diced

Directions:
1. Dump ingredients 1, 2, 3 into a soup pot and fill water to about 2 inches (or less) above the ingredients.

2. Turn heat up to boil, then turn down to low and let simmer for 1 hour. Walk away.

3. Check if the drumsticks are cooked through and folk tender. Add tomatoes, celery / spinach, salt and pepper to taste. Serve.

Great.. While you're at TJ, grab a few packs of their 6 count holiday Chicken tamales (next to the hummus section). So good and filling for breakfast or lunch. They're in the freezer section too year round (2 count).

I too love their eggplant and edamame hummus. It's delicious and goes with everything.

Deborah, so great to hear! I too am a huge TJ's fan. I sometimes will buy their boxed squash or tomato soup and then add chopped up veggies to it, maybe some chicken or chickpeas or cooked rice. They do have really good ready to eat items as well, like those tamales Aerial mentioned.

Varoooooming to Trader Joe's ! Great ideas ! I've figured out what I don't like about water-it's this new small disposable bottle thing. I put ice cubes in a tall (glass) glass, filled it with spring water (borrowed from my pets' gallons) and oh my word how delicious ! Like the water I grew up drinking. How "DUH" to have gone along for YEARS with this small bottle thing (when I drank water occasionally) and never once thought of the good old normal way to drink water. Now I actually look forward to having a glass.

Deborah I ONLY drink water from a glass at home and I have two stainless steel containers I take in the road.
I worked in a chemical plant and just about every up stream product to make plastics is a carcinogen.

On top of that sunlight breaks down the plastic.
How many times have you seen stacks of plastic water bottles out in the sun at a store.
I do all of the time.
Set one out in the sun for a week and take a drink out of it.

The water I drink at home I filter myself through an RO system.
A charcoal filter and RO bladder and then another charcoal filter.
Best money I ever spent.

Worth.
