Pumpkins do get roots on the vine whether you bury them or not to gather more nutrients. Burying helps encourage new roots for this purpose. The more roots the greater the nutrient intake.

At each leaf node they will grow 2 tap roots, one from the bottom and one from the top, by burying the vine you encourage root growth, it also helps to keep the vines from blowing in the wind and helps to keep Squash Vine Borers down. The dreaded SVB can kill a pumpkin very quickly. I had them last year, this year I am spraying to keep them down.

I use something with Imidacloprid for the systemic (I buy Bayer Advanced Tree, but there are many product that have Imidacloprid in them) and Sevin as a foliar spray. The Imidacloprid will kill the SVB's and the Sevin kills almost everything else.

I'm growing the Atlantic Dill this year too. First time growing pumpkins in many years. I started some in pots and am ready to put them out very soon. I think two have flowers on them. They are only two feet long...is this a problem...should I pinch the flowers off?
Thanks.

They are root bound by now. I start mine in a 5" pot and plant out 2 weeks later.

Amigatec:
Thanks so much for the offer. I should be alright. I will plant the two that should be ready next week. I am excited, but somewhat worried about how this will all work out. Thanks again.

My plants have already grown to about 5 feet. And my 1081 plant set the first female yesterday.

I hope I have enough cleared space for this vine...will it grow roots into weedy soil if it takes over even more area?

If you bury the vine at the leaf nodes it should.
