Default An unusual F2

Last summer I crossed a large striped saladette with an F2 selection from the great orange grape hybrid Zima. This winter the F1 was, as expected, a smallish red cherry. I transplanted 18 F2 progeny as part of a Wisconsin breeding nursery on May 22 and I was back to check on them June 27. This fruit was the earliest in the whole nursery and by far the largest fruited of the 18 F2 progeny - it also luckily got two doses of the gs allele. The size of this F2 fruit is at least as large as the larger fruited parent - unusual; and the largest fruited sergeant was also the earliest - also unusual. Taste is excellent, but so it was for each of the parents.

That is amazingly fast development! About 40 days from transplant to ripe fruit. It looks flattened, like a mini-beefsteak. Am I seeing things right?

Yes, it is a shocker. At this latitude (S MN/SW WI) I have only once had a ripe fruit by July 4 - and it was a small cherry in an unusually warm spring. We've had a normal season this year, and although there were a couple of cherry size sibs that were nearly ripe, and an unrelated currant type with a couple ripe fruits - this one stood out. The fruit I cut open to taste and save seed had six locules - it is a small beefsteak type.

Aw this is too good. Suddenly I find myself at the forefront of a fad.
I just want to know where my pretty pointy shapes went.

Wow, a great tasting, good sized tomato the ripens as quickly as Sungold F1? Exciting stuff!
