Plant observation question. I recently noticed that I had a worsening Mg deficiency, and had a few BER show up, which I never get. What would you suspect, and adjust?

Add more Calcium nitrate and Epsom salts, ratio off?

I thought maybe this was a joke or trivia quiz.
From what you have shared about your system and your nutrients. It can probably be blamed on a bad batch. Your cal- mag are together right ? My feeling is your knowledge and precise system will prove this. I wish you good luck in finding the culprit.

Was the BER on all varieties or just one? I had this year the same variety getting BER in container and the tomato bed. It could be something with variety as well, like temperature is too high and it was designed for colder climates. Only one other variety had BER out of 40 + varieties.

Potassium level is too high and antagonising Magnesium uptake.
Calcium is too high and antagonising Magnesium.
Nitrogen from NH4 form decreases Calcium uptake.

These seem to be the most likely potential culprits.

It was Excess K, which caused both Ca and Mg uptake issues. I corrected it easily.

I ran an EC of 2.5-3.0 for sometime to see how high I could push it without adverse affects.

When I noticed the BER on top of the Mg deficiency I knew what was happening. First I cut out the KNO3, then simply reduced the 4-18-38 till my EC was 2.0-2.2. The plants look good, fruit production is still good too.

I posted this because it is good to know your element antagonists. When you see a deficiency many times it may not be a lack of, but an excess of. It is important to use an EC or PPM meter when growing in containers, or know your antagonists. Thanks, that was fun. LOL

It was mainly on one variety, and it was not that bad, but I never get it. I knew something was off, my watering is pretty tight, so I had doubts that it was the issue. I knew I had antagonism brewing.

I was gonna say that maybe you doubled your Kno3 by mistake when mixing up stock tanks.

I also ran a 2.3 EC on seedlings, they did just fine. LOL A guy up the road uses the same mix on seedlings as well as mature plants, and his plants look great.

Hi Tom, it was a sort of Trivia quiz, but some info was missing such as the high EC I was running. The Good part is I have tomatoes everywhere. Will post some pics later. Good luck with your own project. BTW, send your neighbors up here some sunshine, we are in need. LOL

Thanks, but we're on the 3rd hurricane watch in 2 months.
Sunshine is limited. Wind, we got it. Rainbows a plenty.

This GH is the one I frequently show. We are still getting tomatoes, and have been harvesting since early May. There is quite a bit of pruned up vines on the ground now.
