By Friday, forecasters expect a region of high pressure to build over Texas and the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, steering the system toward the southwest. Five-day models show the storm strengthening into a tropical storm before drifting back over the Mexican coast and inland by Saturday afternoon.

This is contrary to what I just read about pressure fronts so I was right.

Somebody needs to make their mind up.

It's easy. A high pressure system will block it and a low pressure system will let it in. That HP system in the Atlantic is to key to making it turn north to Florida.

A LP system turns counter clockwise and HP turns clockwise so according to the forecast the cold front is a LP and will steer it north and the same with the HP in the Atlantic.

Of course that's if all goes as predicted but if one stalls or picks up speed then things are off and then we have that Gulf thing that might effect it too.


I will say, I'm a major Hurricane magnet. So it has a good chance to come visit me.

I think he should visit the Western states. cool it off and give them some moisture. we had an inch and a half last night... first real rain since May. so... While we could use way more I don't want to be greedy. I saw corn the other night whose tops were brown from the drought here. I doubt if there is any corn on those ears. it was pitiful. maybe about 10 miles to the west of us. we wouldn't have sweet corn again this year if we didn't have a pump to water it from a pond.

I saw corn go to hell in a hand cart here.
Plowed under due to rain at the wrong time.
It wasn't on the news but I am a farmer at heart, I know when it is the most un-opportune time to rain on corn.

Irma needs 1 more mph to become a cat 6 storm.

I am hoping that its path misses everyone. A total gutter ball that follows the gulf stream north where it hits cold air and water and just dissipates.

Isabelle, Irene and now Irma.

Latest track has it not even going near the gulf, there is a cold front low that will reduce the Atlantic high that's holding Irma below. So that's going to allow it to curve northward earlier, which means as of this morning, the strongest storm ever known in the Atlantic, IS MAKING A DEAD CENTER BEELINE THROUGH SOUTH PENINSULAR FLORIDA!

That's pretty scary Marsha. Which scenario is better for you- for Irma to run up the east coast, or the west? I know either is bad- this storm is hundreds of miles across. We are thinking of you and yours down there- please take care.

Thanks Darin east is better, because not on the dirty side. But I live fairly inland so if it bisects the center, I will be heavily impacted by the dirty side and very close to the eye wall. Saving grace- supposed to be "only" a Category 3 by then.

Yeah... small consolation that it loses steam over land... especially when every move to left or right would put it over the warm ocean water again.

This looks bad. My sister is in Miami, a nurse. Not sure what her
plans are.

My FIL used to fly through the eye of storms. Terrifying. Very
interesting dinner conversations. He passed away 10yrs ago but
I know this one would have given him great anxiety.

Because of that relationship we have storm prep year round. Not
sure why they are saying three days food and water. Minimum 10
days. We have at least that now in potable water and a good
month or two of food with the upright freezer. Excess freezer
has water bottles and a few gallons of drinking water frozen. Full
freezer is more efficient and the gallons can move to the fridge to
keep that cold if power is out more than a couple days.

We have a generator transfer switch now put in after Sandy.
We also stock water for at least 10 people before a storm. Our
neighbors were not prepared. The list is long...

Different prep for different environments. (we cannot flood being
in the foothills of the mountains).

In a flood area I would have packed and left a few days ago.

Igor taught us many things for prep.

One of my cousins who was here for the wedding this summer is also a nurse in Florida. And nursing/medical is also like firefighters, police, first responders... leaving is not usually an option, they are the ones who stay to take care of the casualties.

Watching this and hoping it byasses land. By the way, no such thing as a Cat 6 hurricane. Everything >180 mph winds, I think it is, is Cat. 5. Even if they are 300 mph, which has never happened. That is what the meteorologist on the news said today. That Cat 6 stuff on Facebook is fasle. No such thing.
