Default Sweet Potato Watering Collars

Since the sweet potatoes were just planted in a mounded row, any watering just runs off either side of the mound, taking soil with it. This morning as I was waking up, the solution hit me. Watering collars. I could cut some rings from old one gallon plastic nursery pots and sink them around the sweet potato transplants. They should hold the water until it sinks in. I need to mulch them tomorrow.

Just something simple but they work.

I did that for a few in-ground zinnias with cut pop bottles. Protects against some bugs and creates that well for watering.

Bravo! It's great when you sort out a simple but effective solution! I've been saving paper towel and TP rolls to use as little collars. I saw the Home Grown Veg guy on YouTube use them as collars to keep the white part of a leek both supported and shaded from the sun so it stays tender and white. He also uses plastic bottles with top and bottom cut off to both keep them vertical and as a wind-break. I would worry the plastic would concentrate the effect of the Florida sun except in our coolest weather, but I'm saving some larger bottles to use as frost covers for overnights.

The cardboard collars will also stop cutworms.
