Default Mid-Atlantic Tomato Tasting/Festival

It's all just a dream at this point, but some of us on the Mid-Atlantic Gardening and Growing Tomatoes forums on that OTHER site (a few of whom are also Tomatovillians) have been tossing around the idea of organizing something similar to CHOPTAG, Tomatopalooza, or any of the other regional tomato fests for our area. Such an event would probably have to take place in August or thereabouts in order to take advantage of the harvest.

I thought perhaps we could have a tomato-tasting to determine the most delicious tomatoes (perhaps different categories - heirloom/OP and hybrid), maybe a largest tomato contest, and also feature dishes made with homegrown tomatoes.

I even have a name for it - MAGTAG - Mid Atlantic Gardeners Tomato Appreciation Gathering (or Group).

Of course, I'm just testing the waters right now to gauge the level of interest ... any comments?

If you want to cross over to the Dark Side and check out the original thread, here's a link:

You'll note that one poster misread my acronym and thought it was MAYTAG - which is even better! How 'bout Mid-Atlantic Yearly Tomato Appreciation Gathering?

Hmm....if we could start enough clubs in enough different zones and countries..and stagger the dates.
I could travel from tasting to tasting and not even have to grow my own tomatoes.

seriously though..you'll be glad you did

"the Cecilia?"

Wow, Greg, am I like "the Donald?"

Just kidding. If you can stand the annoying popup ads, Greg has posted some great ideas on the GW thread that I linked to.

Bully,

what is the name of the tomato fest near you? Do you have any advice?

Count me in for a MAGTAG (assuming I'm not stuck taking kids to soccer or whatever). I hope there could also be a tasting of other veggies and fruits as a "side show", just for fun.

Y'all are going to force me to come back to my old stomping grounds aren't ya? LOL Keep me posted, I'll bring some heirlooms from "almost heaven." I wanted to have a mater gathering here in the mountains of West by God but there was little interest in folks spending a day in the mountains!

Default Maytag--Sounds like "clean" fun

In Southern N.J......will join....would Maryland be the spot, or perhaps a bit further north (e.g. Delaware?).

Tom,

The problem with July is that often few tomatoes are ripe by then in our area. I have had years where I had them in mid-June and other times when I didn't have any beefsteaks until August 25th.

I had suggested August 26th as a possible date and I figure, even then, we will be short many yellows and red/yellow bi-colors. But hey thats life!

As far as a people count goes:

GW/tomatoville member: Number of Guest + self:
Greg 2 adults 4 kids
Cecilia 1 adult + 1 maybe
Janetm 1 adult + ?
Peggy 1 adult + 1 maybe
Tanagerzoo (Christine) 2 adults + 2 kids
Kimka 1 adult + ?
Collectordi ?
Steve 1 adult + ?
CottonPicker 2 adults
Cynthia ?
Noreaster ?
Dunkel ?
Scott 1 adult + ?

Total Number: 18

Add your name to the count if you want to come. Also add the number of your guests and ammend the total.
