I don't think that's a Purple Bumblebee. It might be one of the other Bumblebees, but I don't see any stripes! How big is it? I can't tell from the photo.
It's pretty, let us know if it tastes good! Here's a photo of what I got last year when I grew PB. Robin |

My PBB's look just like yours and my plant is petite compared to all the other plants, but pumping them out. Linda Last edited by Labradors2; July 23, 2014 at 04:02 PM. |

Ok Linda, I'm getting seriously jealous! I picked three sun sugars today that just started turning color before the squirrels grabbed them and I considered that a bonus!

They were really good and very prolific. Next year, I plan to try some of the other colors.

I'm growing PBB for the first time this year. They sure are a beautiful tomato. Meaty, fairly firm (would work well for market growers IMO), very tomatoy flavor, moderate sweetness--good tomato. I find I like them best as ripe as possible. For my taste buds I'd prefer more of an acid zing to them, but overall an enjoyable tomato.

How stable is Purple Bumblebee?
I have three plants and I have got some ripe tomatoes from two of them earlier, but they have been more green than purple, even when already getting soft. Finally the third plant has ripe ones and those are the color I expected. It also seems that the fruits on the green ones are slightly larger.

Svalli,
If you are in Finland, I am assuming that you got your seeds via trade, and they were from lines released to friends, or sold on our website last year. The line sold by Johnny's this year (and other seed companies) is stable. The line sold last year on our "Artisan Seeds" website, and distributed via informal networks occasionally segregates for a "green bumble-bee" like the ones you showed above. |
