Garlic Greens Showing !!! A Problem ?????

My first cloves were planted on I think October 5th. (First time trying).

This morning, looked out back and thought I was seeing things from a distance, some green leaves coming through about 4 inches of straw. Walked up, and sure enough, there they were.

Just asking for a pat on the back with reassurance that we won't have a problem
8 months from now when we want fresh garlic !!!!!!!

Not garlic's first rodeo. I've had that happen, seemed to go dormant with colder weather and came up fine in the Spring.

Noreaster,

I am definitely a novice myself regarding garlic, but from what I have read, one of the drawbacks with the top growth you have is that some of the energy from the planted clove is being used up. You may need to fertilize a little more in the Spring to compensate to allow bigger bulb growth. But in the meantime, you are developing a strong set of roots!

this time of year to see new life in the ground for a new veggie.

Been growing for decades. Your garlic is doing what you want it to do. With a heavy mulch it should continue to put on leaves through Thanksgiving. Roots will continue to grow into December even after the tops go dormant. Assuming your working with a hardneck you will see life in late March. Scapes will show early in June and harvest the second week of July. Like clockwork year in and year out. Easy on the water, especially the three weeks prior to harvest.

OK, as a followup.........ALL 9 experimental varieties have now popped up
and begun to pierce through the straw.

They are: German Red, German White, Gillarny Red, Italian Loiacano,
Kettle River Giant, Korea Red, Music, Transylvania, Uzbekistan.

Got an extra pound of German White for family use.....my God, it is
so superior than the standard store bought stuff !

Can't wait to see the year 1 results next summer !!!!

Works as expected.

My first year growing the stuff: saw my first ones sprout this past weekend, Market Basket variety. Covered them with a leaves blanket + a wire mesh -to keep the leaves from blowing. Cool to know we started our growing season, only 9 months to go before harvest.

As a plant, whatever garlic lacks in visual pizzazz it makes up for in emotional attachment. A comfort crop. It will cross my mind dozens of times over the Winter and make me smile.

And if you ever get around to dehydrating some and making your own garlic powder, that's another item that will forever be scratched off your shopping list!

Okay ! Was thinking that would be a solution to good luck extra garden
production (should that happen, I hope hope hope).
