Default Highly ruffled tomato

Which ruffled tomato would say has the deepest ruffles combined with great taste, color not so important

The ones I discussed with you previously from this link

http://tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=11937

There's always Accordian but it's hollow and best used for stuffing.

Then there's Zapotec Pleated

http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/w...c_Pink_Pleated

But what ever the name they are called, see link above also are hollow.

Summary?

I think your best bet for ribbed/pleated ones are the ones I linked to above, that is the Albenga's,Ligurias, etc.and all that I've grown have tasted great, low number of seeds, and I almost forgot, known as piriform types.

I'm trying these varieties this year, some are new to me so I have no idea what they taste like.
Mushroom Basket (new)
Goldmans Italian American
Beauty Latringa (new)
Zapotec pink ribbed
Costoluto Genovese
Pink Accordian (new)
Gazehnte (new)

Taste wise for me, Goldmans is hard to beat, but isn't nearly as pleated as Zapotec

That s a good top notch popular varieties. I like Zapotec as in your avatar.
I love ribbed tomatoes. I have only one version of Costoluto this season.

It is a very ruffled beefsteak I was looking for I had seeds a few years ago but they have all gone. I will know the name when I hear it but it is nothing like the ruffled one on the post Carolyn mentioned in the earlier post

pmcgrady,

the one you call Mushroom Basket in English has got its original name in Russian - Gribnoe Lukoshko.

So it's better to use Gribnoe Lukoshko to avoid misunderstandings.

And the ruffliest tomato for me is Reisetomate (aka Traveler tomato) And it tastes rather good.

The other ruffled one is Purple Calabash that I like too.

Gezahnte is also very good.

Are you sure, Andrey, that the tomatoes shown post 6 were not grown, or at least created in Tchernobyl ?

Here is one I spotted on J&L Gardens' website:http://jandlgardens.com/catalog/inde...roducts_id=479
It's called Marilyn's Best, and is a ruffled beefsteak. Message them and ask about it's origin. They sell several unusual varieties, so this may be an older cultivar.

Also, another pleated beefsteak:
http://jandlgardens.com/catalog/inde...roducts_id=454
This one is named Pum Rim.

They have another that caught my eye, and I really want to grow it but ran out of room weeks ago: http://jandlgardens.com/catalog/inde...&keyword=maria
This one they got from a Canadian source, and it sounds wonderful, but no pleats.
It's called Maria Amazileties Giant Red. This one makes me drool.

I can get lost in their website. Their varieties are captivating.

Am trying several this year for the first time:
Sakharnyi Pudovichok
Bandelier
Shokoladnyi (Chocolate)
Pokoritel Serdets (Conqueror of Hearts)

Good luck picking just one!

About the Maria one, it's from Romania, but Bill Minkey got his seeds from someone in Canada as he noted when he first SSE listed it, see the link below

http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/w...%27s_Giant_Red

I have seeds for it and have offered it in several seed offers here at Tville.

On your bottom list I have grown the one that translates to Sugary Pounder, # 1 on your list and also offered it in seed offers here and also the one called Chocolate,I have it as Cokoladni (chocolate), from the Ukraine by the Black Sea but not offered yet, out for seed production this summer.

Seeds from a TV member who lives in Slovenia with whom I did a large trade.

It's all good

Carolyn,
what are your impressions about these varieties I listed?
Taste, productivity, growth habits, idiosyncrasies?

I value your opinions immensely (even though taste is so subjective, I know.)

I am very much on the steep upward slope of my tomato learning curve.

Jeannine Anne, I know of one tomato that when sliced it looks like a beautiful flower and it is named Fleur de Reagir. It is a black/purple variety from France.

You can see it and order it here: http://secretseedcartel.com

I was going to order it to grow in this years garden, but, ended up ordering tomatoes from elsewhere for now. I still plan on ordering it for next year. It looks and sounds like a beautiful tomato to try. I love ruffled tomatoes.

Here is part of the description: Beautiful tomato from France. Unique Maroon/black. When sliced it looks like a flower. Thick and meaty with real tomato taste. Few seeds inside.

Only available source in the U.S

That's it, I remember now, I had seeds and gave them away in a seed swap and then regretted it, thought I would have to find an alternative as I couldn't remember it's name but that is it.

Thank you so much..very happy lady here Well Done
