My first attempt to grow Hot Peppers...

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to document my progress for growing Hot Peppers. This is my first attempt and would love to get some feedback..

I am in zone 5 (IL). I have decided to plant in containers instead of in-ground. I am going to use the black 5 gallon plastics bags. I think they are like .89¢ a piece. What i haven't decided is what growing material to use.

I will be using a Burpee seed starter kit...

I just ordered two heat mats this morning. While i wait for those to be delivered, i decided to go ahead and prepare the growing pellets...

added filtered water...

I not sure if its just me but this pellets look better than the Jiffy ones...

So far i have...
Pepperoncini
Anaheim Chili
Hot Lemon
Hungarian Wax
still looking for a couple others
going to through in some sweet also

The Burpee Super Growing Pellets look different because they are made of coco coir, not peat.

Best of luck to you and your first hot pepper growing season. Don't be discouraged if the seeds don't germinate earlier than anticipated. My last ones just started to show some signs of sprouting after 4 weeks. But I know they'll be worth the wait.

You'll also need lighting, a fan, and patience. Looks great so far. Don't forget to experiment with different varieties of hot peppers. That's the fun of it. Bhut Jolokias are great to begin with.

You can get great results growing peppers in containers. I've included a couple of pictures I just happen to have at work - I have many more at home. The first picture is Jalapeno on the left and Sweet Banana on the right, the second picture is Ring of Fire. I use a 60/40 mix of Miracle Grow Potting Mix and Black Cow (bagged composted manure).

At this point I am convinced that peppers love manure even more than tomatoes. In my clay soil, it seems that manure is the difference between a big, successful plant versus one that does not grow at all.

Last year I grew hot peppers in 5 gallon grow bags with the same mix as Randy, and also had excellent results. You just want to make sure you get the MG Potting Mix, not Potting Soil, and I stay away from the stuff with the Moisture Control.

Honestly, I was so focused on what you used for bagged manure that I didn't even notice you said "soil" the first time!

Thank you! I decided to go ahead and start the seeds today using the paper towel method. crossing fingers...

I have flour lighting at home. i should have a small fan lying around somewhere.

Okay, so i got the seeds started today (paper towel method)

Hungarian Wax
Serrano
pepperoncini
Hot Lemon
Jalapeno Conchos
Jalapeno M
California wonder (sweet)

Let's see how long it takes them to sprout...

I like Black Cow when I can get it, but others will work. I've used Moo-nure (ugh for that play on words) and other products.
