THE SMALL-PLOT GARLIC VARIETY TRIALS
Organic garlic trials have been run at Beaver Pond Estates since 1991. The Small-Plot Garlic Variety Trials were started in 1996 for the purpose of proving out the suitability of various strains of garlic in North-Eastern Ontario (Zone 5A) conditions. Proven garlic strains from the trials are sold to home and market gardeners to encourage diversification. Over 150 strains have been tested to date. The garlic trials are run for research rather than commercial production. Garlic is certified organic by OCPP.

ABOUT OUR CERTIFIED ORGANIC GARLIC
We encourage growers by making available new, proven garlic strains from all Varietal Groups. Strains are performance-proven for several years for Zone 5a Eastern Ontario in our Garlic Variety Trials Plot using organic methods. Seed garlic is carefully hand-harvested and selected to ensure top quality, healthy planting stock. Bulb sizes for most types are selected from Large Tube to Jumbo, substituting other sizes when appropriate. Most strains have been improved by the bulbil method. Quantities are limited, in many cases to only a few bulbs per strain. Bulbs are pre-packaged in mesh bags for ventilation in convenient 2-bulbpacks and garden packs. The most popular strains are available in 10-bulb packs to enable commercial growers to develop their own seed supply. Planting top quality seed provides the best chance of success in growing a good crop of great garlic. We grow our own garlic and we DO NOT import seed for sale. If we cannot supply, we will try to recommend other sources. Again this year, a limited quantity of Porcelain “Majestic” is available. Eight years under development, this mutant strain is superior to any other Porcelain type in size, vigour, appearance and bulb size. We lovingly call it “Paul’s Pride”.
