This is just the beginning of my to be long story. http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/Zhiraf And for third time I lost all the links I had about them other than the above one which I just put up. Perhaps tomorrow I can do better with getting those other links here. Summary? There are better so called long keepers that I know of but given the choice between long keepers and ones with taste, well you know how I would answer. Here's something you might Google which I think might interest you as it did me. Google: Endless Summer Tomatoville Carolyn

I haven't grown zhiraf.
Since you're doing an experiment, why don't you see if they respond to a hot water bath. Since they are longkeepers, select 10 ripe tomatoes. Mark 5 with X and 5 with an O. Run a pot of hot tap water 125 degrees F. Place the 5 X tomatoes in the pot with a saucer on top to hold them down for 5 min. After 5 min. remove the tomatoes and let them rest on the counter for a week. After a week taste one of the X tomatoes and compare it to one of the O tomatoes. Repeat every other day and post the results on your thread. Claud Last edited by saltmarsh; October 19, 2018 at 10:10 PM. |

I see this variety is rated by some as a "very long keeper"
we shall see... I am just storing greenies ...to hopefully have for December and January (or longer).

Read somewhere that de colgar types keep longest if picked in late summer just as things are turning cool, and before the fall rains.
Sorry i don't have personal experience or a reference. |

LOTS of info below, about de colgar ones, so called longkeepers and much much more.
https://www.google.com/search?q=de+c...&bih=815&dpr=1 Usually I say I hope the above will help, but on this topic I know the above WILL help. One of the things I want to do before I leave Tville is to do a sticky about how to search for info about almost an anything one can grow. And I always START my search here at Tville since there's a tremendous amount of info here going back to Jan of 2006 when Mischka first put up this site. Carolyn, and yes I do know a lot about de colgar ones, etc, thanks to both Paco(Ilex) in Spain and Vladimir who has had a special interest in the area. And have offered them here at Tville, especially the ones from Paco Next thing I have to do sometime is to find the pictures of de Colgar ones hanging from the rafters while ripening up.

March 1 limit reached this year .
I have Selma and Zhiraff going to go longkeeping ..
I have successfully been able to use both till Feb. 27 and I would say March 1st is the limit this year. This is better than expected results for me and deserves another try .

In a long internet search for long-keepers, I found somebody saying that a tomato called Sheriff was one of the best. I searched everywhere for a long-keeper named Sheriff. I finally realized that "Sheriff" was a mishearing of "Zhiraf"

I see that Nikitovka seeds carries these. I've had good luck with shipments from them. Takes about a month, but they get here. https://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_ssn...hiraf&_sacat=0 -GG |

I will take the seeds from remaining fruit (and seeds collected in fall 2018)and start again for 2019 . I need another year of trial to get better at longkeeping.
