Default Bye bye tomato :-(

Hey everyone,

Here is what I found in my garden when I went to water my plants. One plant had wilted and was completely limp all of a sudden. This variety (Gilbertie) has been struggling from the beginning, nevertheless all other plants in this row were and still are in decent shape.
What do you think was the cause and how would you handle it?
I' m thinking either bacterial wilt or some borer.
I grow in the ground and I don't Know if I should get rid of the debris. It looks like there's no way to save this baby and if it's a disease I really fear that it might spread to the rest of my little garden. Yhis would be a tragedy
The same thing happened to a row of Black Krims earlier in the season. I lost one plant but managed to save the others. I used Bordeaux mixture.

I would guess a borer. One stem on one of my plants did that suddenly overnight. In the AM when I discovered it, I found the culprit coming out of a hole at the very base of the stem. He only did it on the one stem, so the rest of the plant was fine. BtK kills caterpillar worms of all kinds.

Give them more water right away and see what happens.

The only way to tell for sure would be to look for the hole where the borer is and confirm that it is present. You should also cut the stem and check it for health issues as well as placing a segment of stem in a glass of water. If it is bacterial wilt you will have a milky substances pouring from the stem into the clear water. It may happen quickly or take an hour or two to show up. Borer or Bacterial Wilt it is not too hard to figure out which one it is.

Thank you. I didn't know this. I'll do it and see what happens.
