Côtelée de Valence (Ribbed Valencia) - sources?
Hello,
Does anyone know whether anyone offers this seed for sale to the U.S.? Or if there's anyone out there who might be willing to trade me the seed? I love the look of the fruit (http://essaime-artomate.be/modeles/c...deValence.html) but am having a hard time finding seeds. Nobody is listing them in the 2013 yearbook either. Thanks, Kathy |

I haven't heard of this one, but you can search for other ribbed/pleated/ruffled varieties at Tatiana's Tomatobase. Costoluto ("ribbed" in Italian) varieties tend to be flatter than the one you're seeking. Some stuffing varieties are pleated, too. I grew a Cour d'Albenga that was pear-shaped and occasionally pleated, something like Liguria or Red Pear Gransasso. But none of these have that squared-off bell-pepper shape -- Yellow Stuffer and Yellow Ruffled do, but with less ribbing than Ribbed Valencia. A smaller but very pleated (and flat) tomato is Purple Calabash.

Thanks for the suggestions! I am very new to all of this and still figuring out what I want to focus on, but I'm finding I like the looks of the ribbed/pleated/ruffled etc. varieties. So I may explore those a little more. But I am really stuck on finding a source for this Cotelee de Valence. I am even dusting off my college French so I can email folks who have it posted in various places.

cotelee or Cotelette
Kathy
I love quests such as yours to find a specific variety for whatever reason. It happens that I'm on vacation about 80 miles (130km) north of the town of Valence in France. I'm only here for a couple of days more but I'll ask what questions I can. What a delight if it could be sourced. I'll post soon. Jeremy |

Quick update - I managed to find a farmer in France that has the seed and is willing to share it, along with several other old French heirloom varieties I've never heard of.
I'm hoping to grow them all out next year and reoffer seed. Kathy |

I have been looking for this variety as well. I found one site so far, it's in Japanese!!!! I have never ordered from them before...I will keep looking. If I can't find anything else, and you can't get your hands on any, then I may risk it....it shows they're out of stock.
Heirloom Pink Tomato エアルーム・トマト・ピンク種子 www.heirloom-tomato-farm.com/SHOP/.../list.html I found this, as well, but don't know french and how to go from there.. http://ventmarin.free.fr/passion_tom...de_valence.htm Here's another Japanese site http://park.estore.jp/items/index?dm....kk&icd=tc0925 Last edited by ChristinaJo; July 9, 2013 at 12:54 AM. I didn't know the exchange rate. I may be reading this wrong, but I think 1050 yen is about $11 U.S. dollars!? Wow.

How funny! The pictures look like they were ripped off from Ventmarin though. Of course sometimes that happens, doesn't make them necessarily unreputable in terms of their seed but that did give me some pause.
I have yet to receive my seed from the French seedman but I have potentially another avenue that I'm exploring. Let's keep in touch! If I get some, happy to share with you and I hope vice versa. Kathy |

I don't mean to "be mean", but the Japanese site makes me a little nervous. No Paypal or protection......
I have been in contact with "info.tomato" in France. I believe that they are connected with Ventmarin. He is looking at some of my seed for trade. I hope he wants something I have!!! Yes, If I can get my hands on some, I will share! I also emailed JandL in France. I am still waiting for a response. Keep your fingers crossed! Last edited by ChristinaJo; July 9, 2013 at 09:41 PM.
