Tomato Folk,
MAYTAG is on.

Cecilia just send me an email and we have a pavilion reserved for us at SWAT in Baltimore for August 26th.

This is what she said.

******************************
Here are the particulars:
Pavilion 1 (pavilion closest to the parking lot)
Seats 100 (ten picnic tables - we might want to reserve two for tasting displays)
Electric outlet provided
Grills
Playgrounds and courts nearby
Hours approximately 10-6 (Suggests that someone show up 1/2 hour earlier to open - no problem for me)
and best of all ....
BEER AND WINE ALLOWED!!
... So you'll be able to bring your homebrew after all.
*************************

Cecila and I are spliting the cost of $100 on the pavilion. We will have a donation jar at the event if anyone wants to help. Cecilia suggested that if their was extra money that it could go for next year :-)

I suppose we should start looking for volunteers to help set up and tear down. Also, we could make it a potluck type deal but we may want to coordinate only in the sense that people post what they intend to bring so folks know what is needed.

Here are my opening suggestions and they really don't include the side dishes. This is just the mundane stuff:

1. Charcoal: 6 bags
2. Lighter fluid: 2 containers
3. One Large roll of aluminum foil for the grill
4. Water: 6 5 gallon self dispensing disposable containers.
5. Soda: 2 cases various
6. Fruit juice: 5 gallons apple juice?
7. Chicken: 8 chicken cut into pieces (of course sold that way from the store)
8. Grilling sauce
9. Table Cloths: 6 disposable plastic
10. Paper plates
11. Plastic ware
12. 16 oz disposable plastic cups
13. ICE in coolers of the soda and for drinks
14. Homebrew if I am allowed to bring it.
15. Paper towels: 9 to 18 rolls
16. Large plastic leaf bags for extra trash.
17. Tools that will go back home:
a. Grilling utensils
b. knives for cutting tomatoes
c. Magic markers for grading tomatoes
d. Paper for grading
e. Tape dispenser for sticking paper to tables
18. ?
19. ?

If I missed stuff in this list please add or if you think some of this is unnecessary that’s fine as well. As a suggestion We could bring bags of washed salad and then let people add their tomatoes to a communal salad bowl.

Suggested Volunteers:

1. Cecilia
2. Cecilia’s Husband (Chief griller?) (Charcoal, lighter fluid, Aluminum foil, Cooking utensils?, setup and tear down)
3. Greg Flynn (Chicken, barbeque sauce, 3 Coolers with ice, table cloths, homebrew if possible, and anything else as needed, setup and tear down)
4. ?
5. ?
6. ?
All this is just an opening suggestion so feel no obligation, however, all help is appreciated and frankly is part of the fun :-) If you are serious about being a volunteer you should email Cecilia or myself and give us some contact information.

Also, we will try to add our MAYTAG to the tomatoville "Regional Tomato Gatherings" so you may want to catch us there.

Please realize that even the most benign uses of registered trademarks on the Internet have resulted in lawsuits recently. There are dozens of cases. I would also remind you of my pending litigation re: Tomatoville®.

Although it is a catchy acronym, I would suggest something other than MAYTAG.

I cannot create a MAYTAG forum without infringing upon the trademark and becoming legally liable for it.

I have created "MAGTAG" for the time being. I hope that you can understand my dilemma.

say to yourselves with regret

but also with happiness in your hearts

at the remembrance of my long happy life with you:

and not all the power of death

can keep my spirit

from wagging a grateful tail.

Oh, well, we'll have to call it MAGTAG. I kind of like the sound of that one better anyway.

Southwest Area Park (SWAP) in Baltimore County, MD, is located on the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River, just outside of the Baltimore city line. It is very close to all the major local arteries - I-95, the Baltimore Beltway (695), and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (295).

The Baltimore County website provides directions from the Baltimore Beltway. You will need to scroll down the page:

http://www.co.ba.md.us/Agencies/recr...boatramps.html

I will list more detailed directions later. DH says I should make sure that the directions avoid any of the umm, seedier areas of our neighborhood. Keep in mind that Lansdowne/Baltimore Highlands is an old working-class area - it's perfectly safe, but not exactly picturesque!

Very cool! I might get to try some of Greg's home brew! Nice! Those of you going to MAGTAG who have heard about Mountaineer Mystery (God Willing) you'll get to try it there. I will also be bringing several varieties of very rare WV heirlooms.

I was worried when I saw Baltimore listed as the location, but I know Lansdowne area well. My Grandma lived in that area for many years.

Dunkel,

I will have to make a Dunkel for the occasion

I have been wondering about your WV varieties. As I mentioned I work with a guy from WV that was excited to hear that he could get variaties from his state.

We need to do some seed trading on that occasion.

Mark me as 2 Adults. My friend Kevin wants to go also. Maybe we need some name tag stickers we can put our screen names on. It will be nice to put a name with a face. Hopefully this Mountain man won't scare you! Greg not sure about having seeds then. Unless of course you napkin a few! LOL

Dunkel,

I just bagged some blossums today but I am not sure that I will have seeds for any of the later varieties. I am expecting to have some, however.

If you can't bring seeds the tomatoes themselves will be fine

Time will tell. I have flowers opened on Mountaineer Mystery, German Johnson, Yellow Brandywine, WV Straw, and a few others. I will be bagging all mine from here on out!

Craig, if all goes well this year you can bet we'll have another one in 2007. And you can be a celebrity judge!
