I have to wonder if this relates in any way to Codex Alimentarius. For the uninformed here is an excerpt from the Wikipedia page:

"The Codex Alimentarius (Latin for "food code" or "food book") is a collection of internationally recognized standards, codes of practice, guidelines and other recommendations relating to foods, food production and food safety. Its name derives from the Codex Alimentarius Austriacus.[1] Its texts are developed and maintained by the Codex Alimentarius Commission, a body that was established in 1963 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). The Commission's main aims are stated as being to protect the health of consumers and ensure fair practices in the international food trade. The Codex Alimentarius is recognized by the World Trade Organization as an international reference point for the resolution of disputes concerning food safety and consumer protection.[2]"

The current proposals sound like a domestic version of the policies of the international regulatory body. It may be a way of imposing Codex Alimentarius without Congress signing onto a UN or WHO agreement. Just a thought.

Oh and thanks to Feldon or whoever consolidated these threads.

Heirloom tomatoes are too obvious. Maybe if we stick with Round red types we can hide our activities?

Wonder what it means that all the proponents are of the same party. Big Brother government to control every aspect of our lives?

Well, I thought this might come up, but I want to make it clear that my posting this had nothing to do with partisanship. I'm not a Democrat or a Republican, but I don't think that the Democrats are any more Big Brother than the Republicans and vice versa. From my perspective both are authoritarian from slightly different angles.

Not far, I can assure you. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they lobbied for these bills. Even if they didn't have any direct involvement you know they are folding their hands saying, "Ehhhxcellent!"

By the way, does anyone know whether they have developed GMO tomatoes yet? If you grow corn in a corn producing area, there is a good likelihood of GMO pollen infecting your crop just so you know.

Arbeit Macht Frei

If you take away people's ability to be self sufficient, than it is easier to control them, especially if they are hungry.

Yep, Monsanto indeed. Here is a quote from her Wikipedia page:

"On February 4th, 2009 Ms. DeLauro introduced H.R. 875 entitled "Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009." This bill is allegedly to protect the US' food supply, however, it leaves small farmers, especially organic, at a great disadvantage to the corporate ones. Congresswoman DeLauro has several ties to corporate agriculture. For instance, her husband Stanley Greenberg has Monsanto as a client. Ms. DeLauro also receives massive donations from agribusiness political action committees."

I think someone posted a link to this article earlier, but I thought this excerpt was worth highlighting. This is the OpEdNews piece written by Linn Cohen-Cole, entitled, "Monsanto's dream bill, HR 875."

"The bill is monstrous on level after level - the power it would give to Monsanto, the criminalization of seed banking, the prison terms and confiscatory fines for farmers, the 24 hours GPS tracking of their animals, the easements on their property to allow for warrantless government entry, the stripping away of their property rights, the imposition by the filthy, greedy industrial side of anti-farming international "industrial" standards to independent farms - the only part of our food system that still works, the planned elimination of farmers through all these means.

The corporations want the land, they want more intensive industrialization, they want the end of normal animals so they can substitute patented genetically engineered ones they own, they want the end of normal seeds and thus of seed banking by farmers or individuals. They want control over all seeds, animals, water, and land."

Organichris, I do think Monsano does have a GMO tomato. Better Boy Hybrid is not GMO but is not Seminis part of Monsanto? My seed this year is marked Seminis.

Around here the little farms that grew corn are now growing houses. They do raise some corn or ensilage on out farther. I understand it can come along ways but I am with in the city here now. Couple neighbors could plant some sweet corn. All those houses have tiny yards for the most of them as land is so high and not room to plant. Been selling here like $100,000 an acre for develoment.

Last few years I get a form to fill out asking what I grow. I had been selling at the farmers market. How much sold. This year I get a form on irrigation. Cenus forms. None on farming this year .
