I could not disagree more!

The value of morels comes from their distinct flavor. Nothing else should be added to them. They could look just like a chicken plop and they would still be one of the best tasting foods you could ever eat and put other mushrooms to shame.

The commercial puffball on the other hand fits your characterization to a tee.

Oh Yeah! Morels have a rather nutty but really indescribable distinctive taste and smell. I never find that many, so I just saute them in a little butter. We had a major blow down of trees on our property last July. It's about impossible to walk on the old paths anymore, but maybe the change of environment will benefit the morels in future years.

I tried searching for mushrooms in Oklahoma before. I found about 3 of em at Lake Overholser. Just below the dam on the west side. It was a lot of walking though. Delicious. Had them in my scrambled eggs.

Pizza without mushrooms ain't pizza !
But my favorite is button mushrooms sauteed in butter with onion, salt and freshly ground pepper. As a side with mashed potatoes, it's superb. At least it is in my vegetarian world.

By the way, when I mash zucchini into mashed potatoes it tastes exactly like artichokes.
Adding molasses to cornmeal mush tastes exactly like pumpkin pie.
I don't eat bologna anymore but when I make a cheese sandwich and add garlic tops it makes the sandwich taste just like bologna.
Again, in my world anyway !

Morels grow in Oklahoma every single spring.
If you find them, they will be in that same spot again the next year.
Friend picked 40 lbs. Sunday.

Back home there is a guy who showed on local tv an episode of him picking wild morel mushrooms on Haleakala (Maui). I think he more or less made it clear that they weren't supposed to reveal where his picking grounds were. People are funny. They sometimes share lots of what they have but they do have their quirks about their true generosity.

Yes, when quantities are limited and the season is short, mushroom hunters and wild blueberry pickers are quite possessive of their best hunting grounds!
