Iowa State/AAS Trials
Our local (SE Iowa) organic gardening club visited the IA State Univ/AAS trial gardens in Fruitland, IA, Aug. 8th.
This is an open-house after judging has been complete. BioChar evaluations are ongoing from the 2012 incorporation. Photo #8 shows an instructor with a bag of Biochar. Growing in BioChar control plots: Kale, Bell Pepper, Basil, Zinnia and others. This is sandy soil, and no plant supports are used. Numerous seed suppliers included Monticello Farms, VA, for the 4 o’clock ‘Sweet Scented’ heirloom seeds. http://www.monticelloshop.org/600100.html The categories planted this year is (was)- ‘Evening Garden’, ‘Tomato Gardens’, ‘Giant Garden’, and ‘Pepper Garden’. Evening Garden examples… 4 o’clocks, Datura, Moonglow, Petunias- EZ Rider Blue, and Sophistica Blackberry. Tomato Gardens examples… Celebrity, Cherokee Purple grafted*; and Mountain Fresh. *rootstock = Maxifort. (2) student-made, single-plant, circular raised beds with Kellogg’s Breakfast tomatoes. Giant Garden examples… Green Monster Cabbage; Parks Whopper Yellow Marigold; Kong, Mammoth & Titan sunflowers; Tomato plants, Henderson’s Pink Ponderosa and Kellogg’s Breakfast. Pepper Garden examples… (all hybrids, all sweet bells); Archimedes, Lulton, Red Knight. Most impressive pepper plant- ‘Archimedes’ Bell Pepper. (Seed supplier was Siegers).
