Green foliage and CRW cages
Hi all,
I enjoyed a good tomato season, but just into August it started the late summer, or hot weather, decline. I haven't pulled the cages up yet and have noticed that practically all of the old foliage inside the cages is brown. A lot of it is still alive, but brown. However, all of the foliage outside the cages is green and looks healthy. It's even growing and is putting on blooms. Looks like new plants. But it is only outside of the wire. I can't imagine that the wire would make any difference on heat, so I can't understand why this is. For example, if there are branches sticking through the wire, they are green on the outside, brown on the inside. The part that grew past the top of the cages is green, but the part still in the cages is brown. It's like you drew a very distinct line. Everything inside the cages is brown. Everything outside the cages is green. Are any of you experiencing the same thing? What causes this? Thanks! Don

Never saw that up here...this time of year only the new growth is green and even that is rapidly spotted with septoria/early blight/speck. But I have not noted an absolute line like that with rusty CRW cages.
How hot is it? Maybe it really is radiant heat from the metal cage grid burning the plants. Maybe try a pair of thermometers, one hung inside, one outside, of the cage? |

Foliage inside the cage is denser and older. One or both factors coul contribute. Dew or rain in denser leaves could lead to more mold in the cage, for example.
