non trellising peas

for years i've grown sugar snap which is an edible pod variety that requires trellising. i bought some non trellising peas for a friend and took 1/2 the seeds to try. i picked the 1st 3 peas of sugar lace today, they looked like the pods were full. i was surprised when i bit into each pod to find while the pods were large there was very little pea inside - they are mostly air!

is this normal for sugar lace? is this normal for non trellising edible pod peas? maybe the pod grows and the peas fill it in and i picked them too soon?

we've had non stop rain and clouds for all of june (20 or 21 days out of 25 with rain) but i doubt the lack of sun or excessive rain is the reason, or is it? i'll be picking some sugar snap in a few days so i'll know but it seems the lack of sun never prevented sugar snap from filling the pod with large sweet peas.

I never grew Sugar Lace, but I did grow Sugar Ann alot which supposedly didn't need trellising. They were always full although a little shorter than Sugar Snap. The key to picking snap peas at peak maturity is when you can easilymake out each individual pea in the pod.

yeah usually i can see that with the sugar snap. the sugar lace looked like the pods were bulging so i picked what looked like the 3 fullest. maybe i need to look more closely. i'd assume the non trellis type fill out the pods like the trellis type. i'll see next week.
