Bill, there is no tulip poplar tree around here. We have all kinds oak, maple, sweet gum trees.

On the plant out, I have just planted out 12. Eventually I will have about 50.
Now our worst forecast is for coming Wednesday ( ~ 25F ) and Thursday ( 30F). Then it seems that lows will climb up to low 40s - low 50s.
I built a hoop over my plants and starting tonight I covered them with 3 layers of tarp. As I said the grand finale will be on Wednesday. I believe that I shall sail through this.
Come March 19, I will start planting the rest of my first batch. My second batch won't be ready til April 10-12 ( 8 weeks seedlings by then ).

My tomatoes are all protected, NO problem but at this time 8 AM, March 12 it is snowing. hahaha
and temperature is 38F. all this is just some white rain.
We didn't get any snow all winter long and now this is our NATUARAL spring herre and the CALENDAR spring is just 8 days away.
So this is how mother nature is confused and follows no rules. How can you trust her.

I'm tired of fighting with her.Average last frost here is April 30 and the safe plant out date is considered to be May 10. The last three years we have had frosts after that date and as late as May 15. I will probably start seeds the first or second week of April. I could still plant out around May 10 but at least size will not be forcing my hand.

No point in fighting with her. Mother Nature always wins.

In 1997 we had an April Fool's day blizzard. I remember a major ice storm in May when I was a teenager. And then there was the Halloween day nor'easter in 2011 that crippled the area for over a week.

You never know what her next move will be.

I believe that we have to FIGHT the mother nature.
That is why we build houses, invented and use heaters and coolers.
We can d that , to some extent, in the garden.

It has been a weird winter for sure and so far much warmer and very dry. It has made me givensome serious thought to trying to set a few early variety tomatoes a couple of weeks earlier than normal if the extended forecast looks favorable. But will wait to plant most of them at the usual time. But I've gotta say I am really craving some good tomatoes and have been known to change my mind. Early for me would be the middle of April with late April my usual time.

I was thinking about how there have been no ice/snow covered roads here this winter. I cannot remember the last time that happened, and I have lived here for almost 52 years.

Last night, a cold front blew through here. We have gotten used to 70s and 80s for the highs. The temperature dropped into the 40s with some cold rain and 30+ mph winds out of the north. It was cold. (I couldn't help but laugh a little as I wrote that, because that weather is what is normal for here in earlier March.)

I don't know what normal weather is down hrer as it is my first winter here.
Bu we have had very nice Feb and early March.

Update: The snow just stopped. It came down pretty heavy but most just melted.
This was our first snow of the winter and probably it will be the last. But cold nights will continue for about 5 more days. .

I did something very unusual, perhaps by planting tomatoes as early as Feb 23. But so far that has been just 25% of my total.
Come Friday and we will be out of the woods, with highs climbing to 60s and 70s.
Talking about cold treatment, my tomatoes have gotten plenty of that. And a few are budding and a Silvery Fir Tree has flowers on it. It is usually my first.

Been there, done that. Every place is different, but here I'm not sure it is worth it. More disease, more BER, less production and in the end the later plantings catch up to the early stuff.

I went out looking for juniper berries for a ham curing smoking experiment and almost froze my tail off.
Wet and cold.
I didn't find any mature berries either just young ones.
But the blackberries are blooming.

23 here last night, and it will be 22 on Tuesday and Wednesday night. Pear trees are in full bloom; they're goners; or at least this year's crop will be. The peaches are starting to bloom, but have not opened. I don't see blooms on the berries yet. They are a little smarter than the fruit trees.

It's hot here. As usual. I know you'll all hate me but I'm so envious of your cool and wet weather. I loved the storms we've had here recently. Turning the clocks forward depresses me every year. I long to see a blackly cloudy sky and feel the brisk cool or yes, cold, winds. OK, so I'm a fall and winter girl! Well, California's fall and winter that is. Fall, come baaaaaaaaaack!
