We used what is called nut plug up north, it was ground up pecan hulls and was so so if put out thick.
And yes it would get tracked in the buildings.
The best thing is slip protection on your feet.
I used the chain cable type with star spike things on the chains.
Called Yaktrax diamond grip.

My husband and I both carry a pair with us in the winter. They work great.

I was outside casting one of my new rods and reels and saw my neighbor Henry come out to check the mail.
He was bundled up like he was above the arctic circle and it is only 47 degrees F and no wind.

we have had 5 and 6 degree days with a lot of wind for 2 or 3 days, just plain cold.
about 6 inches of fresh snow overnight, and a few more expected over the next day or so.

good news is the chickens are starting to lay again, after taking a two month break.
two to five eggs a day, somewhat inconsistently, but hey, we'll eat them.

Drove into the nearby city at 11 degrees this morning. Getting out the car with a coffee in each hand , the wind buffeted us, and the closer we approached the lake I had nightmarish memories of standing at the school bus stop years ago. My right pinkie wa so cold I couldnt wiggle it--used my other hand to get it going again. BRRRRRRRRR

THen warmed up nicely!

We got about 6" yesterday evening into this morning. Looks wonderful outside, just cleared the snow. The only bummer is the temperature is rapidly dropping, down to 9F with wind chills below zero again, so not taking the little ones to the sledding hill. Maybe we'll get a shot next weekend.

I was wondering why it was so cool and comfortable in the house.
Before I go to work I set the thermostat to 55F.
It is 62 and dropping in the house.

Then I turn it up when I get home and let it warm up then turn it back down to 55 at night before I go to bed.

Yes I have a programmable thermostat but I am too lazy to program it and my schedule is too whacked out.
I just do it manually.
So I get up warm the house up then before I go to work turn it back down.
Then come home and repeat it again.

I have no problem at all sleeping in a 55 degree home.

lol we get that same warming and cooling effect via the wood stove!

Temps dropped to 15 last night but felt oddly warmer at 7:30 when I let out dogs. Snow storm due tomorrow.
