S. pimpinellifolium F1
A couple winters ago Dar Jones (Fusion) sent me seed of a couple S. pimpinellifolium lines he found interesting. He noted one had very dark red flesh, and I made a cross to my striped Sungold line. This is a photo of the F1 fruit - faint striping, deep orange color and very good flavor. There will be striped sergeants in the F2, anyone interested in helping with a grow out?

Yes please!
I am growing out several orange F1 hybrid cherries/grapes this year for a taste comparison and will be able to put the best of them up against your F2 next year... Last edited by maf; July 19, 2015 at 06:51 PM. |

Thanks everyone for the interest. I think we have the right number of cooperators on this project - I'll have seed to send this fall to all those that have currently expressed interest, but probably no more at this time.

With 8 or so collaborators, we should have enough F2 plants to find almost every possible combination of traits from the parents. My general thoughts: 1) from the S. pimpinellafolium parent we want small fruit size (currant), long fruit trusses (10+ in the F1), and perhaps improved leaf disease resistance (F1 looks pretty darn good in a tough year); and 2) from the striped Sungold parent we want stripes, flavor (F1 is good +), and the range of flesh colors coming from a Del or B/gf parent.
I think in the F2 we will find both red and orange fleshed fruit with either gold or green stripes in a range of sizes between currant and cherry. I hope we can capture Sungold flavor and fruit in long trusses with very good tolerance to cracking and plants with excellent plant health. I'd like anyone finding anything close to one of the above objectives to provide seed back to me, and I will share the next generation seed with the original collaborators that would like to continue to be involved. If you have not already done so, please send me your mailing address and how many F2 plants you can plant. Please share results here. Good luck and thanks. Mark |

I've got plenty of diseases here to test for! So if it survives my NC garden, you'll know it's good!
