Variety descriptions

I'm sure this is a newbie question that has probably been addressed before.

WHERE can I find a comprehensive source (preferably on-line) of descriptions of the many varieties of tomatoes I'm running across?

There are upwards of about 12,500 OP varieties, and I don't know if you're asking about OP's ( open pollinated or hybrids or both.

If you're new to this fun of growing tomatoes then for some of the best pictures I suggest you go to tomatogrowers.com ( OP's and hybrids)as well as Marianna's ( I forgot the link, but you can find it at Google, as well as Baker Creek which is rareseeds.com Also with some good pictures and descriptions is Victory Seeds. Also check out seedsavers.org for about 40 varieties with pictures in the public catalog. SSE members have another several thousand to chose from.

At the top of the this website there is a list of seed sources, which includes all of the above, and you might want to check out heirloomtomatoes.com and Sandhill Preservation as well. Neither one has pictures and the descriptions of the latter are minimal, but Sandhill has the lowest prices around and gives lots of seeds and has excellent quality since they sell no seeds older than 2 yo and that's quite a feat for about 400 varieties listed.

And that should give you enough to look at for a while.

Thank you. I'm interested in OP varieties.

Although a rookie, I'm a member of SSE (MO SI G, formerly LA SI G), and get the publications from Sandhill and Baker Creek. I'm not looking for pictures, so that I can recognize different varieties. I suppose what I really wanted was a rather detailed description of about a dozen seed varieties that Gary sent me yesterday, so that I can accurately describe them, when I pass the seed along after the 2007 growing season.

I suppose what I really wanted was a rather detailed description of about a dozen seed varieties that Gary sent me yesterday, so that I can accurately describe them, when I pass the seed along after the 2007 growing season.

George, if that's what you really wanted then the best thing to do is to ask Gary for the descriptions. he's pretty good with his backgrounds on varieties.

No sense going to all those seed sources if you already have the varieties in hand.

And if he doesn't have the information then post it here and let's see if others can help.

And as you can see, I did delete the other duplicate thread as you asked.

hehehe George, but the only comparison would be if you can get Gary in a skirt. However I am sure you are right....she probably knows much less about tomatoes....
