Default Grow lists for MAGTAG 2008

I thought I would start a thread to see what those planning on/hoping to come to MAGTAG 08 are growing this year. My list is far from complete...but so far I have selected:

Andrew Rahart
Polish C
Lescana
Chapman
Joe's Portuguese
Jeff Davis
Earl's Faux
German Murphy
Yoder's Yellow
Tom's Yellow Wonder
Black from Tula
Kosovo
Wes

I have many more varities in my collection that I will start and peddle off to neighbors. Still trying to select those.

Wishing for a good spring and summer

Well, I know I'm growing my old standbys - Sungold, Stupice, and Lemon Boy. Boring! Hey, but a girl's gotta eat!

I'm also definitely growing Nyagous this year, since my Dad loved it, and Black Cherry.

I'll have to look through the packets of seeds I got in trade last summer and see if anything looks interesting. And I can't for the life of me remember what I ordered from SSE and TGS, but I think I went heavy on the black varieties.

I'll post a list later.

I just selected seeds 2 nights ago. I will plant them by the weekend.

I am going to emphasize some of my crosses this year and see what I get. Last year I had seeds that I started from a F1 cross between Prue and Marianna's Peace. Of the many F1s I started I picked two for grow out. The first was one that exhibited a droopy potato leaf characteristic and the second had the droopiest regular leaf characteristic of the batch.

The droopy potato leaf cross I named "Emily" and it turned out to be a nice pink beefsteak with great flavor. I will plant a bunch of them and pick the best one for next year.

The other was sort of a plum and it was great eating. It did well in our taste competition so I am going to grow it out and pick the best of that batch and perhaps give it a name as well.

Other new things for me include:

White Current (I'll put this in a pot on my back porch)
Berkley Tie Dye (mine from last year got Fusarium)

Stand-in’s include:

Dr. Lyle
Earl's Faux
Cherokee Green
Cherokee Purple
Sungold
Black Cherry

Maybe Aunt Gertie's Gold.

And lastly I was trying to make a Cherokee Green X Yellow Cookie. I was hoping to make a Green Heart from the cross. I will start a gazillion seeds and see if I get any intermediate leaf types and then I will grow some of those.

Can't wait to start tasting them!

I have added a couple of "orange" tomatoes to my list. Will bring back Kellog's Breakfast...neighbors were in love with this one (me too!)...when I would come to the door with a sack of goodies...first question was "did you bring me any of those orange ones?".

Also trying Orange 1 and Djena Lee's Golden Girl (which may be more yellow/gold than orange).

Still have a few more to pick...I plan on starting seed the week of 3/21. Still have to find some Pro Mix...everyone around here seems slow in brining in supplies.

Greg--looking forward to hearing more good things on your crosses.

Mark,

The supplies can't come to fast can they? My local Southern States always has some but I am usually looking for there Vermiculite so I can concoct my own.

Kellog's Breakfast is a favorite of mine but I can only grow so many!

Gene, it depends on what part of Maryland you live in. Here are some "last frost dates" for various parts of the state - but you should wait a week or two after that date to put out tender plants:

Annapolis 4/23
Baltimore 4/11
Cambridge 4/26
Hagerstown 5/3
Oakland 6/5

I live in Baltimore County, just outside the city on the SW (warmer, Chesapeake Bay-influenced) side. I usually wait until the end of April to set my toms out, and protect them under a cold frame for a few days just to be sure.

Gene, I mean it depends upon what part of Maryland YOUR SON lives in! Just make sure you protect those little plants on their ride down!

I'm not growing as many varieties this year. Here is my list (I told you it would be boring):

Sun Gold
Lemon Boy
Stupice
Black Cherry
Nyagous
Cherokee Chocolate
Sprite (because it was free from TGS)
German Red Strawberry
Paul Robeson
Olena Ukrainian
Momotaro

I think that's it. Some are new for me, but most have already been sampled at previous MAGTAGs - except, I think, for Sprite.

Oh, I forgot to add Church to the list. I'm growing this because it was a favorite of the late Chuck Wyatt, and he grew his toms in the eastern part of Baltimore County. I figure if it did well in Chuck's garden, it should do well in mine.

Greg--I got lucky Sunday...went to a local nursery and found they were selling some of last years Pro-mix at a discount...selling it at buy one--get one free. So I picked up four--32 quart bags of Pro-Mix for $20. Not a bad price at all. So I think I am set for supplies. This coming Sunday (23rd) is seed planting day!

Gene--you gave Yoders and I can't wait to grow it!

And I added to the final list the following:

Yasha Yugoslavian
Cherokee Chocolate (also from you Gene...grew it last year but got Cherokee Purple instead)
Box Car Willie

Hey, Greg - I think I owe you an apology! Remember those Black Cherry seeds you gave me last year that never germinated? Well, I planted some from TGS this year and only one plant has germinated. Perhaps they're just tricky.

Cecilia,

Those seed arn't tricky. The batch I gave you was definitley bad. It's hard to say how it happens. Perhaps an extended fermentation?

Anyway I have tons of seeds now and they are comming up like crazy just like they should. If you like I could mail you some in a jiffy.

I have had trouble with TGS once before. Being a seller they should do germination tests. It could also be the mailing process. When I dissed TGS on the other forum Carolyn gave me the whatfor!

She says they have a very good rep and I believe she sends them new varieties to try. I wouldn't give up on them but Johnny's is very reliable. TGS has more selection though.

Anyway, if you would like seed I could send some tommorow.
