Not sure what tomato I’m growing....
I am frankly baffled - I think the hot summer has fried my brains. I have labeled tomatoes to save seeds and now there is one tomato that I labeled as Black Magic which is clearly red. The only red tomato I am growing is Blackhawk which is much smaller and a different shape. It’s too red to be Rebel Yell.
So what I thought was Black Magic is planted next to Momotaro and ISRL. It’s in the same raised bed as Rebel Yell, BlackHawk, ISPL, Mikado Black, KARMA Pink, Russian 117 and Momotaro and ISRL. I put a small RY next to it for color comparison. Its not getting dark, as in a dark tomato, just more red, unless I’ve lost my perspective. Any options are welcome. Sharon |

Could be a blunt Russian 117. They are large and red.

First picture, left is probably pink, right is probably red and same for photos under that.
But I've been fooled several times just looking at ripe ones,so what I do is to do the test of peeling off a bit of epidermis from a known red and same for a known pink and the test one,and then comparing the peels.I can say more about how to do it if you haven't done that before. As for specific I'd's of the two you keep showing,I have no idea. Carolyn

Karen, that makes sense. It didn’t occur to me at all.
Carolyn, I am going to do that today, and would appreciate your guidance on that as I haven’t done it. Looking forward to your directions. I’m planning on saving the seeds and labeling them “unknown tomato” because I honestly can’t figure out which tomato it is. I have a few like the big “red” one, and the Russ.117 has been incredibly prolific this year - I’m finding the stems have branched over into where my other plants are - so who knows? |

If it grew from seeds labeled "Black Magic" and it isn't black, then it's either a stray seed or a bee-crossed hybrid. If it's from your saved seeds, you know what else you were growing the year you collected seeds. It could be one of those red varieties or a hybrid with one of them.
