Can someone ID this volunteer?
This attractive little plant has sprouted in one of my gardens- it is about 10" high. To me it looks like a nut of some kind, but in WA I just don't know what it would be. The root is swollen and hard- the trunk is very strong. I have potted it up and will watch it. Any help is very welcome- Thanks- Jo in the TriCities

It could be a shagbark Hickory. Do you have any near you - or any squirrels who could have planted the nuts? It's a lovely tree!

I have no clue about Hickory- I'll ask around and see if anyone can tell me- in 10 years here I have never seen a squirrel in my neighborhood ! There are not many trees at all around here--
