Default onion question

Was going through old post on here see picture after picture of onions pulled that still have nice green tops that were still growing also see this on dixondale web site. wondering why anyone would pull them before the tops fell over on their own and done growing. Only thing I can think of is rain is comming but if they are still growing the the rain won't hurt them. Any thought on this???? What am I missing????

I agree it makes no sense. I wait until the tops are down and the neck is soft when pinched before pulling. Waiting longer does not seem to do any harm in my garden, but pulling too soon may compromise size.

maybe they just wanted to eat onions? i would pull some if i needed onions and it was late july or early august. i usually have to use up last year's onions before eating this year's so i don't think i ever did other than pulling misshapen or doubles as they won't keep long. i stopped growing ACE due to doubles. one year i grew so many onions that it took until october of the following year before i finished them all. they were copra and still ok but getting to the point they weren't going to store much longer.

Tom I to will pull an onion or two if I'am out of onions and like you I will pull the culls first. But I will not pick a green tomato and set it on the windowsill to rippen.Never did understand the reasoning behind that!!!
