I read that any of the dwarf tomato varieties should be able to do well in a 2.5 - 3 gallon container, while determinate varieties can do well in a minimum of 5 gallon container ... I use mostly Earthboxes for my growing but was thinking of trying to squeeze more tomatoes into my tiny space this season so reading this thread with interest of what folks have grown successfully in these smaller containers.

I see you mentioned Budai Torpe. It seems to me that since you're going down that line, some other good options would be some of the Dwarf Project varieties from the Sleepy line, which had Budai Torpe as one of the parents. This would actually leave you with some rather impressive options:

Rosella Purple
Rosella Cimson
Wilpena

... just to name a few. If you follow the Rosella Purple line down, you can also try varieties from the 'Rosy' line.. which had Rosella Purple as a parent. This would give you:

Loxton Lad
Loxton Lass
Uluru Ochre

... again, some very good options.

Don't you think the Dwarf Project tomatoes would prefer to grow in 5 gallon containers?

I have grown Arctic Rose (the smallest of the Dwarf Project varieties) in a bucket which was smaller than 5 gallons, and it did very well, but the others get quite large.

I am going to try Maglia Rosa in smaller containers this year too. It will be our first time growing them.

For the most part I think the Great Dwarf project Toms need at least 5 gallons and up

5/7 in My opinion. I make no secret that I am hooked on the "Grumpy " Line as my

favorite Dwarf Line in my environment . Yukon Quest and Arctic Rose etc. but I would give them a 5 to 7 gallon as well. I am growing about 15 varieties of Dwarf project this year and for me I would give them all a 5 gallon and up rating .

That's what makes the 3 gallon quest a particular small size that is bigger than a Micro or mini etc. ...but still smaller than 5 gallon etc.

FYI : I tried Loxton Ladd 2017 , Loxton Lass cued 2018 , Uluru Ochre cued 2019 LOL

Exactly, I like those compact tomatoes that are happy in 3 gallon containers because that size is fairly easy for me to move around on my deck (under cover when it rains, or back inside the house if it gets cold early in the season).
