Test Photo Variegated Tomato

It's not really obvious in this photo, but the stem is nearly all white with a pink blush. This tomato hasn't produced a flower, and the leaves cannot tolerate much sun it seems. They tend to dry up on the edges. It will surprise me if it makes fruit.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but the average passerby would say "hey, I think one of your tomato plants has a disease." I guess it's all about growing something different, right?

Yeah, Feldon, I saw it in the SSE public catalog and thought it looked cool. I like variegated stuff whether it's a flower, a shrub, hostas, ground cover, or edibles. They just look attractive to me.

You're right though ... this thing looks sickly at first glance.

I grew Variegated last year and it was a pretty plant, but by the middle of July the variegation was gone. I guess from the sun and heat. By late September the variegation began to come back. The tomatoes were small round red with a hint of a stripe and undistinguished in flavor. ( As always, for me, here, last year.) Lots of comments from people who saw the plant; one even asked if I had crossed a tomato and a hosta. I wasn't sure if they were serious or making a joking comment.

That's a beautiful plant! It would be worth growing for the foliage alone.

Two of the most variegated lines segregating out have yet to produce any flowers.

KC, do you think that is a typical trait, i.e. more variegation=less fruit?
