Default Sunflower stalks?

My sunflowers have all died back, and the birds are enjoying the seeds. Can I throw the stalks in the compost pile? What about the remaining parts of the flowers? Also, someone told me not to compost tomato plants. Is this true?

Hummmm, I compost both sunflower stalks and healthy tomato plants that died back or were pulled by me, just not anything that is diseased or sickly.

I tend to have the bigger stalks on the sunflowers, so wait until they are dried out and run them through the little wood chipper to hurry nature along. Rob claims I would put most anything through the chipper, LOL.
