Scientists Are Using CRISPR to Make Spicy Tomatoes

The fruit could soon look and taste more like chili peppers.

On one hand I'm thinking this is interesting and could be awesome......on the other hand I'm thinking there are so many things we shouldn't be doing just because we can....the possibilities of many unintended consequences, some of which probably aren't known until they happen.

Woah...Thanks for the link. Looks like they are messing with the genome but this time actually "activating" something that's already existing in tomatoes...interesting to watch for sure.

I'm so old fashioned... I actually like that tomatoes and peppers have a different taste and texture, that makes them even better when combined in a dish.
If tomato gets crispy as well as spicy then, it's not a tomato it's a pepper. If tomato stays smooshy but tastes like a pepper, where does the crispy bit come from. I guess there is someone out there who wants one plant to do everything..... how bout tomato flavored cabbages?

Yes I read the link, but IMO if I wanted a spicy hot tomato I'd slice up a few of my fave beefsteak varieties, cut some slices and sprinkle some hot pepper flakes on the slices.

AND,I'm not going to do that.

Carolyn, who says that just b/c something can/could be done, doesn't mean it SHOULD be done in her opinion.

My question is why? There's already spices/peppers to jazz up anything you make with a tomato. I don't see where it would be marketable after the first rush of everyone wanting to try it.

Here's another interesting thing I was reading about today:
https://www.sciencedaily.com/release...0103142306.htm
Scientists engineer shortcut for photosynthetic glitch, boost crop growth 40%

They tried it in tobacco first, but tomato, eggplant and other crops are to be tested next.

One thing about the increase in crop biomass, most of it was stems. If that holds true for tomato and eggplant, I guess they will be disappointed! If it was me, I'd try it on celery...

We love to have tomatoes with different flavors. Why not a little spice? I'd taste it before I'd nix it.
