Default Mulching onions?

My onions are well established now, would it be okay to put 6-8 month old leaf mulch around them to deter the weeds?

I mulch my onions after they get well established. I use wood chips. I suspect leaf mulch might be too dense. The wood chips allow the top of the onion to protrude above the soil, which is normal. But there is enough mulch to keep the area damp.

I use mulch around all my plants and see no downside to its use.

I use straw for that purpose and it works well. I haven't used aged leaf mulch, so I cannot say for sure, but I'd think mulching is better than letting weeds grow since onions do not compete well.
