My favorite red cherry is Casino Chips...great for eating fresh, in pasta salads, cooked into sauces. Very productive and with good old fashioned tomato taste.

Black Cherry is a very nice balanced tomato. Tastes a lot like a full sized black tomato in the vein of Cherokee Purple and Black From Tula.
Maybe not a true cherry but Mexico Midget has a full tomato flavor in a tiny package. I always try to keep at least one plant. Ildi for productivity. Try to keep up with one full sized plant without giving some away. I gave a seedling to my parents a few years ago. They have better sun than I do and my mother fertilizes a little more than I do. Anyway, that plant fed them, any visiting friends and family, a whole bunch of slugs and still left fruit rotting on the vine.

Ambrosia by definition interprets as "food for the gods." Interesting that these ambrosia "strains" just appeared recently (to my knowledge - maybe not so?). I grew some Ambrosia Sweet Corn and it was off the chain. Admittedly, I have never grown a mater w/ the ambrosia tag. I normally do not do a fall crop, but think I could definitely do some cherry types w/ success. Previous attempts w/ the "full-sized" maters had green toms dying in the late fall and frost. With the waning sun, they never wanted to ripen. With a 50-60 day maturity and a smaller cell, should go smooooothly. I wish they sold seeds in "variety" packs. A top ten offering, 50 seeds/5 each, or top twenty 100/5 assortment. I would like to grow several - well, just b/c. LOL, but don't want 10 plants of the same. ... & at this time, nursing in a protected area in the august heat (planting calendar suggests planting NOTHING in August - not even a cactus) and then set out in September would probably go over well. What I'd like to know is the difference between Ambrosia Pink and AMmbrosia Rose. Any experiences?

Good question. I had the pink but not the rose. Pink was good, but I liked Ambrosia Red better.

I'm pretty sure I got the Ambrosia Pink from alittlesalt. I think the ambrosia lines have a reputation for being less than 100% stable.

The only Ambrosia I've trialed is Ambrosia Gold. It's the only cherry I've trialed that tastes "like" SunGold. The taste though is weaker, like a 75% strength SG. And, as the season gets longer, the flavor gets even weaker, maybe 25% or less of SG's strength. SunGold's flavor never weakens in my garden. It's the same in July as it is in October.

I have not grown a whole heck of a lot of cherries. The first one I recall was a sweet 100 plant that sprawled. It was work to find those tiny tomatoes, and there were hundreds, perhaps thousands of small, marble sized tomatoes, that tasted amazingly good. The next year I grew it again, but on a trellis, and it did not taste remotely similar and production was lacking as well.
At some point I tried sunsugar and that has been my favorite since. Last year I tried Sungold and it was good, but has thicker skin and splits more. I didn't think it was bigger, but perhaps larger trusses. I grew Ron's Carbon Copy last year. It was not very sweet, actually kind of sour. Very plum like. I have seen others call it sweet, so I wonder if that was not completely stable? My black cherry got mismarked last year, so I didn't get to try it. Should have some soon, this year. But I really love sunsugar, and I'd be surprised if I am swayed. Can't wait to try that Karma, though. Last edited by JRinPA; July 25, 2017 at 02:06 AM. |

I haven't grown many berry varieties, but Ambrosia Gold was an absolute standout for me last year. The most flavorful I've ever tasted and no real cracking.

Grew Sun Sugar and Black Cherry with good results. Third time for BC and I like the taste this yr a lot better. SS sweeter but smaller. Gave most away but like them fresh off the vines warm from the sun.

For me, Ron's Carbon Copy was not what I'd call sweet in flavor, but did taste just like Carbon; big smoky taste for a cherry and prolific. It's a serious must grow for me.
