Default My Hubby's Chicken Hobby (we call him the chicken whisperer)

While I am busy gardening my husband is busy pulling apart hardwood skids that he brings home from work to make the world's heaviest & cutest chicken coop. I'm very proud of all of his hard work. All of the wood has come from recycled skids! We are going to paint it in the spring to match the main house!

This is his rooster Napoleon in the doorway (named for his little man complex)

This is my one and only chicken, a ginger silkie named Zowie Bowie - her "hair" is just like David Bowie's in Labyrinth

This is one of his little Mille Fleurs - all of the hens are bantams.

And this is the long view with the completely covered outdoor "playpen"

The only problem is that the human house doesn't have a pretty gable window or a wrap around porch

Just wonderful pictures, Nicky - a real treat for my morning's viewing. I love bantams, had one as a pet many years ago. Yours are very well housed! Kudos to the 'chicken whisperer'.

I'm glad you all like the pics!

The Silkie has quite a crazy hair do. I wonder what my hair dresser would do if I walked in the door with her tucked under my arm asking for a blow dry!

Absolutely

That was the 2nd choice for a name.... 3rd choice was Johnny Rotten!

The rest of the little hens all sleep in a row together. Zowie sleeps by herself. She gets along with the rest - but is kind of lonely (or so I thoughyt). So we got her a white silkie to hang out with. Oddly that one is a bit of a loner as well, although they do sit together outside. I have Silkie naming rights in our family (due to my punk rocker background - don't ask- I am hung up between Rod Stewart or Debbie "Hairy"." Leaning towards Debbie. I'm thinking Blondie is a bit more white haired than Rod! Plus, trying to feminize Rod is a bit hard - Rodwena? Rodette?

What do you think Worth?

Ditto everything but... with one addition. I'm not fond of Opera.

I always coveted Debbie Harry's hair. I think that I will live vicariously through the chicken! "Debbie Hairy the chicken" it is!

That coop is the cutest thing ever! We had chickens once, but ended up with 5 roosters and 1 hen. I hated it that they chased me and pecked at my legs. We also didn't have a top on their pen (6' fence) and they flew out at night and roosted on my rose trellis or in the top of the clematis. Now we get geese or ducks instead.

That chicken coop is FABULOUS!

Glad you could use pallet wood, but having done some of that kind of recycling myself (making bluebird house), it's work!
