has anyone grown Favorie De Bretagne or Black Icicle?
I googled them and read the seed site reviews and what little info I could find. Just wondering if anyone on here has grown them and what you thought of taste, size , etc.. I have both growing right now. Transplanting them this week.
Favorie De Bretagne is on the left and Black Icicle pictured on the right Thanks, Ginny Last edited by Fiishergurl; October 27, 2015 at 07:31 AM. |

I grew Black Icicle this year. It was a healthy (but spindly looking) and productive plant. The fruit was a large size for a roma/plum as expected but the flavor was a little bland for me. I dried some and added little seasoning for flavor.
I much preferred Darth Mater and Purple Russian for a dark plum or roma tomato. Bill |

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the reply. I have too many seedlings at the moment, so trying to pare down which ones wont make the cut. I think i will forgo these because I have some others that come highly recommended for flavor. I like tart, tangy, bold, or sweet flavors. Anything but bland.... :-) It will go to a neighbor so I should get to still taste it. Just wont get the best spot in my garden. I actually have some neighbors that prefer blandish tasting tomatoes. I'm pretty sure you read Tania's page for Black Icicle, at least to get some history of this variety but if not, here it is:
http://t.tatianastomatobase.com:88/wiki/Black_Icicle Just two folks list it the 2015 SSE YEarbook, the first person says nothing about taste or performance, the other person I know well since he's a seed producer for me and he said very good taste, which is not near the top of the adjectives that he uses to describe taste. My Google is not Googling so I can't look for other comments, nor for the other variety, but you might find out more if you Google Ventmarin (in France), and click on English translation. Carolyn

Thank you so much Carolyn!! Yes I did read Tania's site. But what you mentioned is also very helpful and reinforces that the taste might not match the beauty and with my limited space I am more into taste (as I believe you have mentioned is your main criteria).
Thank you again. Ginny |

I had Favorie de Bretagne last year and could only try one single fruit because late blight killed everything early in the season. To be honest: I asked myself why this tomato had this name, but perhaps I would have liked it later in the season...

I tasted a black icicle from a friend's garden. Won't be growing it ever. No flavor

I was growing both one time.
The Favorie de Bretagne who circulates in Germany is not the real, you have to look here http://tomodori.com/forum/topic7075.html Black Icicle was for me not superb but not bad, I will try again. |

Aubergine, I had got my seeds from France via another European country and it looked very much different from the pics in your link. It was more looking like Green Sausage and the flavor was terrible.

thank goodness for the feedback from everyone because I have limited space and definitely do not want to grow any spitters. I have other seedlings ready to transplant like Not Purple Strawberry, Gary'O Sena, and one I got seeds from a fellow forum member named Sgt Peppers that all get rave reviews for taste so those are growing instead.
Thank you for all the feedback. Ginny Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using Tapatalk |

Heres an updated picture. Left is Black Icicle and right is Favorie de Bretagne. Plants are very healthy. Ive decided to leave them in these tiny containers, prune to one stem and see what happens. That way they are not taking up full size containers.
