Default first plant to germinate... on the moon!

This is pretty cool. Maybe should post in 'undercover' gardening.

Anyway the little cotton sprout looks cheerful enough, for dark side of the moon.

At first I thought it was in a capsule with humans like the space station, but no,it was a probe that was unmanned.

Have I got that right?

At least they didn't have to deal with fungus gnats.

Yes it was unmanned. Very interesting design for the plant capsule, to use fruit flies and yeast to supply CO2 ! You certainly wouldn't use fruit flies in a food garden. I guess they will be looking at those fruit fly carcasses to measure how much mutation in that environment. And fx of low gravity. Gotta start somewhere.... if they don't survive it may be good news.

The cute little sprout is now dead. Apparently it got down to -45C and the canister was not heated.

Whoops... RIP, sprout. I'm surprised they didn't think of the ol' -45C being a problem for cotton.

I had to look up the moon to see what and where it was.
I have kept my feet fermly planted on the earth all my life.

No really I looked it up because of a conversation at work totally unrelated to this thread.

DID YOU KNOW.
The Moon rotates on its axis?
Its true.
There is no permanent dark side of the moon.
It should be called the far side not the dark side.

The moon rotates on its axis at the same rate as it revolves around the earth so we only see the one side.
Both sides get way hot and way cold.
It does have a wee bit of an atmosphere but not enough to hardly consider.

More reading about the moon.
