After more than 40 yrs. doing it I've figured out how to save almost $5.00 but I actually devote 6 months.

Me too, actually. Picked up first set of 5 plants Fri and had started soil prep a month ago. More like 8 - 9 months. Helps keep me young (turned 74 in Jan).

Actually we all are not saving, but spending more money and time
 But this is a great peaceful hobby and our own tomatoes are the best in flavour and production. Plus growing tomatoes is one of the best ways to make new friends over the world

I agree with Andrey - my tomato growing actually costs me more money than if I just bought tomatoes from the store. But the trade-off is worth it as I get to grow much better tasting fruit and get the benefit of having a relaxing activity in which to engage.

Of course ! Money is not the issue. It's like getting a painting that is a treasured piece of art. I can get a cheap replica or get the real deal original for more money. But they are not the same to an art connoisseur. And we Tomatovillians are connoisseurs and we want "the real deal". It's mostly a matter of taste. And also the satisfaction that comes from the years of experience and learning we get from our hobby/passion. My understanding of what a "well grown" tomato plant is, has changed over the years. I'm still searching for the Mona Lisa of tomatoes !

Someone wise said many years ago: It's better to sail hopefully than to arrive. (No guarantee of the wording being precise.)
For me it's at least 80% about sailing. I get my kicks from watching them grow and I also enjoy solving the problems that are related to growing them (technological or otherwise). And there are quite a few. I love tomatoes as such, but that's just a cherry on the top of a cake. The body of the cake is the process of growing. Strangely enough, I got a questioning post on our Czech forum two day ago, something like: is it worth it? The answer is simple: "worth" has at least two meanings, money and joy of living. The answers then are "No" and "Very much so." in that order. Not for everyone, but I'm one of the lucky guys. Milan HP |
