I have tried several different mulches, in the past. Red plastic, white landscape fabric, black plastic, black landscape fabric were all failures, for me. Too hot down here for anything black and the others don't suppress weed growth. For the last few years, I have had great success with newspaper, covered with straw. Suppresses weed growth and holds moisture in the soil. I am also experimenting with straw bale gardening, for the first time but that is another story, altogether.
