Default When do you start Giraffe?

Ciao all,

I'm getting ready to sow my tomato seeds tomorrow, yay! Finally got my Manyel seeds from TGS so that's a relief. I want to grow Giraffe this year as my one and only late-keeper. I know there are several of you who have grown this one and I'm wondering when to start sowing the seeds if I want these for the end of the season? I'm very happy it's a determinate because I'm thinking a container might be a good idea if the transplanting stage overlaps the growing season of other plants in the ground. Do you all wait until about mid-season or somewhere August-ish for Zone 5/6 or do you start them earlier?

Julianna

I show Giraffe as about an 80 DTM variety. So I think you need to do some backwards math. Start with your first frost date and work backwards.

It is a pretty good keeper on or off the vine.

Taste? Well that’s subjective isn’t it?

Good luck,

Ciao Jerry,

Thanks for that. Things started slowing down at the end of October for us so I'm thinking probably starting the seeds at the beginning of May would be about right.

Usually I start my Giraffes early in March 60-70 days before transplant in greenhouse (Zone 4a). Then have fruits ready to pick up for storing from mid August till late September.
As I've already mentioned this is a very looong keeper. Up to 6 months!

Andrey, these are the last of my Giraffes this year. They are just about 6 months since harvest. Thank you very much, Sir, for sending them to me a few years ago.
