sjamesNorway's short year's review
Steve’s Tomato review 2019
First the bad news from the greenhouse: Altaiskiy Oranzhevyi (Altai Orange) – What a difference a year makes. It was great last year outside, but later than I want. I tried it this year in the greenhouse, where the fruits just wouldn’t soften at all when ripe. Not returning. New Girl – hard skin, mediocre taste. We didn’t eat them. Rosado de Ayerbe – great taste, but very poor production this year. Copper River – excellent taste, but the fruit goes from ripe to mush in the blink of an eye. Odoriko – medium production, just ok taste and hard skin. The good news: EM-Champion – SEASON’S BEST and grown outdoors! Pretty hearts with superb taste and a DTM of 65. Except for one plant of Pervaya Lyubov (which I’ve been planning to try), all my outdoor plants will be EM-Champion next year, and I’ll try it in my greenhouse too. Everything else worth mentioning was grown in my greenhouse: True Colours – KarenO’s creation is a jewel of a tomato, beautiful hearts with excellent flavor and production. Returning! Not Vintage Wine – Last years favorite, and still going strong. Sweet and productive. Indian Stripe – This one’s been with me the longest. Excellent taste, earliest in the greenhouse, and it just keeps pumping out tomatoes no matter what. Green Giant – My favorite GWR so far. Aunt Ginny’s Purple – early midseason large delicious fruits, and productive. German Queen – an excellent tomato, but later and not as productive as Aunt Ginny’s. Oaxacan Jewel – a smaller tomato with good taste and production. Not particularly impressed. Steve Last edited by sjamesNorway; October 6, 2019 at 03:49 AM. |

Great writeup, St.James. I keep hearing good things about EM-Champion. May have to give it a try. Does it produce over a long season, or is it a single-harvest type of determinate?

Thanks for the heads up on EM Champion. I'll have to give it a try this next year.
For those wondering like me. Here's a description from Tatiana's (and a good source to get seeds!): "Sprawling determinate plants with wispy regular leaf foliage grow up to 3' tall and are excellent for growing in pots. High yield of red fruits, from perfectly shaped hearts to slightly ribbed/ruffled. 6-12 oz. Delicious balanced flavor, meaty flesh. Very few seeds make it a real challenge to collect save many seeds for this variety. (15 seeds / packet)" Here's a T'ville link where it was discussed: http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=38208 Thanks St. James! |

I'm looking forward to growing EM-Champion next year, thanks to Steves' glowing recommendation . I love hearts and compact plants, plus this one is early!!!!! The question is, do I file the seeds under "E" or "C"?

So happy that True Colours did well for you Steve! Likely the most Northerly place it was trialled
Do you have seed for the others to try? If not, pm me K |

We loved Pervaya Lyubov - first to flower and first to ripen. We grew 2 plants that kept pouring out the fruit. Excellent taste for a smaller tomato.

Hi all, and thanks for your replies. I've been on a 3-night trip to Tallinn, Estonia, and its wonderful medieval old town.
Nan, EM-Champion produced from 65 days until frost. Thanks for the offer, KarenO. I'll send a PM. I'm looking forward to trying Pervaya Lyubov, guruofgardens. It's good to know you like it. Steve |

Thank you for the wonderful reviews Steve. I always enjoy knowing how things have done in your gardens. I too will have to look for some EM Champion seeds based on your review.
