Major Corn Tragedy
Well, my corn succomed to a major disease today. The disease is a horrible malady known as "Cow Eatem UP Disease". Yep, one of my neighbors cows (4 cows) decided to come over and have breakfast this morning. I had just had a talk with this very neighbor over his horses in my pasture. I only had four corn plants planted but there were 9 ears of corn on there. They stomped all around my yellow meated and orange meated watermelons but somehow those didnt suffer any damage. Maybe they were being polite. When I go talk to these people all I ever get to talk to is a boy who appears to be 11 or 12 years of age because his parents no speaky the English. I cant make myself rant at a child. You wanna know what really ticks me off? Well, do ya? This guy owns a fence company. Those 3 acres are the only part I have not fenced. I guess I am gonna hafta go out there and fence it to protect next springs crops
I wonder iffin I have time to plant corn again?

You got good pollination off just four plants! Are there corn fields nearby?

. It gets worse, I didnt realize it when I was looking at my watermelon plants because they were all nice and leafy still. Right now half of them have wilted real bad. Some of them had baby watermelons on them. I'm just gonna fence in the back pasture this month and chalk it up to lesson learned. I still have the other watermelon patch thats doing real well. The melons are for my wine making. Thanks for letting me yell about it a little. Mjd

Maybe he's trying to drum up business from his neighbors?
I'm sorry that your garden was hit so hard. My dog gets into mine and tears the stuffing out of it, but I've found that some of the damage can be overcome with a good slow soaking, perhaps that would help your melons survive. |

One thing you can do to help your corn pollinate is to collect the pollen from the tassels on top hold a container under the tassels and gently shake them to get the pollen to drop.
They use a small paint brash and brush the silks, may sure you touch every silk with pollen. |

I can send you some. But in Houston they may not grow well.

You might try to ask that neighbor for a discount on some of that fencing he sells as compensation for the damage. I don't know about there, but around here, people that have property lines in common split the cost of fencing between them.
If that doesn't work, a trip to the local police/sheriff might be in line. I know Texas is big on "free range" out in the country. But it sounds like you are in a more populated area where there probably is at least SOME kind of regulations about controling your animals. Especially if those animals cause damage. Carol |

I would love to try a few. How much do you need for the seeds?
