Wood Rot, Termites, Other?
Today, I pulled some 1x2 stakes out of the gardens and saw what looks like to me - Termite damage, but I guess it could be other things too. The 1x2s were bought back in the 1990s, and were not painted. The damage is only on the part that was buried in-ground. I was thinking that termites would eat any wood they can get to below or above ground. This was on only about 10% of the stakes I pulled, and most of those were in red clay/sand mix.

I think it is just rot softer wood going first and leaving the harder annual growth ring that develops at the end of the growing season.
Do you know how to recognize a termite tunnel above ground? I have followed them for may feet before. Worth |

I just went out there and looked. The wood is soft and lightweight on the effected ones. Okay, so if I trim and paint them, they should last a little longer.
lol, can you hear me pinching that penny. a new 8' 1x2 cost a dollar. The last time I saw termites was at my grandfather's house about 40 years ago. I think I remember there being holes in the effected wood and fine sawdust. |
