Default Park Whopper

Do you grow this and do you like them? Am considering them for next year, heard that they are great producers, is that true?

Thanks
Mike

Mike:

I grew these awhile back and they were nothing special for me. Neither their taste nor their size was extraordinary.

Default Park's Whopper

Grew it several years ago and wasn't impressed with production or taste. Seemed to get bushy but didn't produce very well in our FL winters. Didn't grow it again.

I like the Whopper and it does well for me here in Zone 3a. This picture is my 2015 plant looking from the top down - not a great shot since in reality the lower tomatoes are much larger that those at the top. I trimmed the flowers off the top 2 clusters a couple of weeks ago since we frost around the 2nd week in Sept so those fruit counts are smaller than the usual 6-8 per brach. The fruit are beautiful, smooth and unblemished just like Jet Star & Big Beef. I find they taste quite good, but not as good as Big Beef or Steak Sandwich. For me they are typically early mid-season, often the first mid to blush. I have never had a BER problem with them and for me, they are a fine hybrid.

This year I grew a parks whopper, for me it was ok and did have a lot of tomatoes on the plant (I grow in 9' cages mostly unpruned) but it got neglected as Cherokee Purple quickly became my favorite. I also grew pink brandywine (#2 favorite of the big tomatoes), mortgage lifter, better boy, mr. stripey, early girl, sun sugar, and sun gold.

I had good luck with it one year but the other two years it did poorly. I found Big Beef to be much better and more consistent for a hybrid. I now grow nothing but heirlooms grafted onto very disease resistant rootstock and it seems to be the best of both worlds for my garden.

Big Beef is better, PW had a fairly big core for me so I had to throw away 1/4 of every tomato.

Pretty good for my garden for the past two years. I have the Park's Improved version. Medium to large red fruit, blemish free, a work horse for bulk production, good as basic fillers for freezing and sauce. I gave some plants away early this year, and got positive feedback as well, for production and withstanding neglect.
I will grow it again.

A friend who grew this one called it the Park's Flopper.

Mike, they have grown better than most in my garden with a good taste. They are back to blooming again now. They are on my next year list.
