Default Old German leaves

Planted some Old German seeds from a little pack of organic seeds I got off a side kick at Walmart. Small green pack with a drawing picture on front, not a photo. Anyway, I got 2 regular leaf and 1 potato leaf seedlings come up. Which should it be or is it both and should I assume all 3 are Old German? Thanks in advance, CECIL

Haha! I just started some of those seeds, I think. Wonder what I'll get. But last year I bought Bonnie's Old German, and they had potato leaves.

Eta: Oops. It was German Queen that I bought last year. But what I put in my seed tray 2 days ago was those green envelope Old German bought at WalMart.

Cecil, when in doubt Tania's data base is the place to go first, for information about varieties..

As noted above, it should be RL and a typical gold/red bicolor beefsteak of which there hundreds of other ones.

Would you please look at your seed pack and tell me the source of the Walmart seeds?

I happened to be growing both Old German and German Pink right now.
OG has RL and GP had PL top.
They both are some of the least vigorous plants in my garden so far.
The seeds were sown Feb 12 and planted out around Apr 12.
I grew OG last year in PNW and it turned out as a mule. So did 3 or 4 other varieties. I think it was weather related b/c one of those mules have 4 golf ball size tomatoes already. It is the one seen in my current avatar picture.

Carolyn, It's a company called Home Farmer and I have only seen at Walmart, but I don't think it's exclusive. They have a website:

I think it's weather related as well, since both of the varieties do well for almost everyone.

Old German is a typical red/gold bicolor of which there many hundreds around.

I hope you realize the significance of the German Pink one.

Yes,one of the two varieties from Bavaria that started SSE back in 1975.

The other one from Bavaria is called Grandpa Ott's Morning Glory, still grown by many including me.It's a dark purple blossom with a pink throat and reseeds itself wonderfully.

I had about 65% germination from that Home Farmer Old German seed pack. Some plants from it are PL. But most seem to be RL. So what the heck! I planted the PL ones. The RLs are still in their seedling cups. No blossoms on any of them yet.

Provided Photophuket keeps hosting that free until Dec 2018, ^ There is a photo of the plants I grew from that seed packet. Some are obviously more PL than others. lol I am going to plant a few RL plants and see what they produce just for giggles. But, yah, looks like 2 different varieties mixed in the pack and the majority are RL.

^ There are the PL plants.

I planted some of the RL plants from that seed packet yesterday. So we shall see what we get from the PL plants vs. the RL plants.

Those Old German plants on 7-21-17. I hastily recycled last year's "German Queen" tags, so that's why these say German OLD.

I ditched both Old German and Pink German.
I bought a German Queen plant (Bonnie's ). It was probably some time in June. Now it has about a dozen tomatoes, some as big as 6 oz, at about 2ft height. But it is dropping blossoms now, due to high heat. So far I like what I see.

I liked those but the Bonnie truck didn't bring any until last week of June, and by that time I already had buckets of seedlings including these Old German. Last year I spent big bucks on plants. This year I didn't. The Bonnie plants looked diseased or neglected so I bought some peppers and a few tomatoes from one local nursery. Most of my tomatoes are going to be from my seedling assortment. Except the massive volunteer cherry tomato plant that grows about 1' per day. Its parent was not anything like the jungle vines the cherry plant is becoming. Lol

I've grown German Queen, one of the most beautiful plants I've ever seen

http://tatianastomatobase.com/wiki/German_Queen

Notice when it was first SSE listed by Kodoma from Hawaii, she was a person that back then SSE sent seeds to do the listings.

Was it really from Kentucky? When you see it had an accession number of what,86, which means SSE was sent it in one of the first years after they started, that would be 1995 or 6,who knows about the reliability of what was said by the person who sent it to them, which we don't know.I could get my 1991 Yearbook out and check, but why bother now..

Fact is I saw the 1994 Yearbook near the top of piles of my Yearbooks and yes, she was still offering it, no comment about who might have sent it in initially, but aha,who else was offering it? NY MA C, that's me, who rated the flavor as just good, which is way down the list of adjectives I use to describe taste.

The potato leaf plant is turning out medium to large sized "red" tomatoes.
