My new salad/herb garden

I'm just assuming everyone's seen the driveway salad garden that Peter Duke in Orlando, FL made and has pictures of over on PVCplans. I waw it a couple years ago and wanted one of my own.

I thought long and hard about it. I managed to buy some pieces for it when I got the stuff for my 5 gallon bucket container garden. The other day I painted the pipes to match the deck and yesterday morning I had the time to get it together.

The larger brackets are left over from my torture project: I drowned some tomatoes by hanging them in poorly drained buckets on the north side of the house (alas, no useful intelligence was gained). These 10 foot long HDPE drain pipes (Under $5 each at Lowe's Depot) are a lot less rigid than PVC, so I built an extra bracket out of 2x4 to put in the middle. I cut 5 18# ovals into each pipe and drilled a couple drain holes around the center planting hole (covered with landscaping fabric). The ends are landscaping fabric and electrical tape. One bag of Moracle Gro potting mix filled the pair of pipes. I haven't run drip to them yet, but I've got some 1/4" line that has the holes spaced along it. So when the time comes I'll just run a length down each pipe.

I know it's late in the spring to be planting lettuce, but gardening projects are more about future seasons than the current one. I'll be all set up for fall lettuce, and if this goes at all well there's room on those brackets for three or four more pipes. And room on the deck for more brackets...
