Big Detroit Red Beet

Here's a beet that I grew, it weighed 13.2 lbs,. I know that this is really small compared to the giant sugar beets that people grow competitively, but I've never seen a regular Detroit beet this big, has anyone else grown something like this?

I’ve never seen one that big of good ol standard Detroit dark red. Maybe need to plant that one in spring and collect some seeds

You do know how to grow extra large veggies

what were the rest of your beets like?

i have grown detroit dark red beets for many years, being my home town,
and all. never had one that size, not even close to one pound let alone 13 lbs.

Impressive! Will be interested in hearing about a taste test. Larger beets can tend to get woody.

+1 on holding the largest ones to next year and saving seed. Even if they aren't tender, the seedlings might grow very quickly and be amazing earlier on in a season. Great project!

Yes I grow them like that all the time. They look like that but they are only 1-3".
