Your favorite Project Dwarf?

Perfect!! Thank you--many more than I expected. Is there one you would say is most similar to the Cherokee Purple in flavor? growing Tas. Choc. and Boronia towards that end.

Fred's Tie Dye is a workhorse in my garden, Wild Fred, Arctic Rose and Tasm Choc have done great for me too.

Icyman - to me, the closest in flavor to Cherokee Purple may be Rosella Purple - to my taste buds. Fred's Tie Dye will be similar as well in flavor. Dwarf Wild Fred too. I find Tasmanian Chocolate with not quite the flavor intensity, but it is very pleasant.

So many differences each year, hard to know what's " best" but the only ones I have grown twice were Puprle Heart and New Big Dwarf, so there's that.

I've gone back and looked at the ones I helped deliver to the folks who release them to the public. I'm still looking thru them, but one I will try to get a couple plants for is "Kelly Green". It is the GWR tomato that convinced me that a tomato could be green and still taste good. I'll drop seeds for it tomorrow.

I am growing one var from dwarf project, for the 3rd time
DWARF PURPLE HEART.

I like its shape and color, more than any other feature. But i think it tastes good too.
As i recall, its not early for a dwarf. I call it mid season.

Dwarf purple heart i grew side by side with about 20 other dwarfs two years ago. It's what I would consider a mild black similar to taz chocolate.

Craig and I bounced a couple emails a while back where we sorted the dwarf maters by flavor profile into a bunch of different categories. YMMV since tastes differ from person to person. I'll have to go back and see if I can find out.

Best case is to find a 'mater buddy on TMV that shares your same taste buds when you describe a mater. There are two or three people I regularly bounce emails with simply because we share the same taste buds, so its easier to compare notes and sort out which we consider duds and winners before the other gets to them. Saves a bunch of time.

Tennessee Suited, Beauty King, Brandy Fred all tasted great to us and produced tons. Toward the end of the year perhaps the taste was not as good but it could be I ate too many This year I am trying Rosella Purple and some others that resemble the flavor of Cherokee Purple which to me is one of the best -
One for production is New Big Dwarf and tastes pretty good as well. Rosellla Crimson tastes good also but not the producer at least for me

I've never grown a dwarf variety before this year. I'm trying:

Dwarf Pink Passion
Dwarf Purple Heart
Dwarf Wild Spudleaf
and Sean's Yellow Dwarf

So far they are doing very well and I'm excited for that first taste!

So far I have tried Sweet Scarlet Dwarf, Rossela Purple, Dwarf Orange Cream, and Dwarf Mr. Snow all in grow bags. I have been a little disappointed in their taste but I'm still getting the hang of using the grow bags and their unique fertilizer & water requirements from what I'm used to, so my results are probably due to my inadequate skills with this new to me method of growing tomato's. So I should probably give these another try once my technique improves.

Here is my dwarf growout, first time in many years. Some were damaged by hail, a few restarted late from seed, some healthy but planted late. The tallest in center back row is Tenn Suited with Tastywine a neighbor to the right.
I had to restart Cherokee Tiger because the first two plants fried in the sun. Back in the early project days of dwarf hunting and selecting for color, I never found any chartreuse plants.



Not pictured is Dwarf Purple Heart with a badly hail damaged stem getting tlc in a pot . Coming back but it will take some time to recover.


Over 60 dwarfs were given away at plant exchanges and to a patio gardener with children. Hers are 2 feet tall and were not in a hail storm, two or three plants per 5 gal bucket.
